Houston Apartments

So, I just talked to a rental agent and he hooked me up with some places in the midtown and galleria area or the city…

Is it a good spot to be? I’m not trying to get kidnapped.

Does public transportation go everywhere?

Any other help would be cool. I’ve never moved to a place where I had to literally start over so…even if you don’t know anything about Houston but have made a move alone to a new place tell me how you did it

I have an idea for a game show, it would be called ‘Urban Survivor’

Basically, the contestant would be air dropped into the heart of a big city with nothing but the clothes on their back an $50. The city would be far away from any friends/family.The winner would be the first person to be perfectly self-sufficient with no debt to their name.

The losers would probably be the people who get kidnapped, mugged, or have something stolen from them, these things would make you disqualified.

Necrophiliacs would be practicing their debauchery on the distended anus attached (barely) to your carcass within two days.

Those areas are nice and perfectly safe. The Galleria area in particular is kind of swanky. The Galleria is our very large, very expensive mall. Public transportation in Houston is, for the most part, nonexistent. We have busses, but they suck. There is a light rail system but it pretty much just goes between downtown and the museum/medical district. What area of town will you be working in?

ok, good to know I wont be going to a redneck/ghetto part of town.

I will be on Winkler for work. I was told that buses will get me there with no problem…not true?

Think the point he was making is Houston is so massive that our public transportation can’t handle it. Houston proper is over 630 sq miles. When counting all of the unincorporated areas Houston is over 900 sq miles. That means you can fit both Los Angeles and New York City at the same time with room to spare. They’re expanding the light rail to cover most of the city at various connecting points, but that’s a couple of years from being finished. MidTown is “young and hip” with a ton of bars, clubs, restaurants, shit like that. The Galleria area is old money, but still with a ton of shit to do and see. Be careful with your realtor though. Both of those are vague area descriptions and you can wind up in some pretty shady areas. We’re the cheapest metropolitan city in the country (by far) and you’ll find your dollar stretches pretty far here. I’d recommend looking into East Downtown, or Edo. It’s blowing up right now, and you can find deals that won’t be there in even 6 months. There’s a ton of cool shit here bud. If you have any questions, holler.

Everytime I hear how big Houston is it blows my mind. I cannot even comprehend this. lol My hometown is so small, on a good day you can walk to all sides in a few hours.

lol, Price difference between Houston and Miami is why I’m not going to Miami. Houston’s cost of living looks a lot like my hometown.

I was told PosT Oak and River Oaks are the complexes he has selected for me. Shady? Obviously, I’ll visit first but off hand what do you think about those two? Oh, and Memorial and one with a Spanish sounding name I cant remember right now…

East downtown, huh? I’ll ask about that when he calls and look it up on google. thanks.

Haha, yeah it’s nuts. I’ve lived here for 27 of the 32 years I’ve been on this planet and there’s still a number of areas I’ve never been to.

I’m assuming you’re talking about apartment complexes? If so, not familiar with either but Post Oak is a street that literally drops you off at the Galleria and River Oaks is one of the nicest neighborhoods in the country, and also right around the corner from the Galleria. Sounds like your realtor’s legit.
Edo’s got a ton of new shit popping up, and unless I got turned around it’s much closer to where you’ll be working than the Galleria.

You wouldn’t make it past the qualifying round

Dude, from Galleria to Winkler, trying to take a bus, is goign to be a pain in the ass. it’s ot as easy as you think. Winkler is not a great area by any means. What company is it?

My advice, move out towards pearland, or deer park, and buy a cheap car.

Oh shit.

PX and CR in the same town.

This could get interesting.

There seems to be a pretty good sized crew of guys from here in Huston, isn’t there?

You guys ever get together, hit the weights, maybe block out the sun?

I live in Houston and I never met anybody from this site. If you never been here, you have no idea how incredibly big it is. I read that New York City and L.A can fit inside Houston with room to spare.

I can believe that. The Burgh is somewhat geographically confined and about 1/10th the population, but if you have to cross more than 1 river to get somewhere it probably isn’t happening.

You have nice major roadways down there though. When I was in Dallas/Ft. Worth the speed limit was more of a minimum recommendation than a maximum. If you go 90mph. on most of the roadways here you’re going to lose parts of your car.

[one with a Spanish sounding name] San Felipe.
All the areas you mentioned are upscale. You will have a lot of trouble getting from any of those areas to Winkler. You really need a car for that commute. Winkler is actually in South Houston (industrial area) about an hours drive from Galleria on a good day.

You won’t make me an honorary Aryan!

You going to be working near Hobby Airport?

How long are you planning on staying in Houston, or is this a permanent move?

A small cheap car is the way to go. Houston was not designed for Mass Transit. You can take the bus from out of town to downtown or the med center pretty easily, but getting near to Hobby Airport will suck.
