Our son is thinking about Rice next year. If it happens, the Puffs will be contacting you about the in’s and out’s of Houston.
I live right around the corner from Rice. What a good school, but extremely Liberal. Just giving you a heads up. If you are Liberal then it will be perfect. A little weird, but the campus is beautiful.
I was there a few years ago in March. Those TREES. Gorgeous place. As for liberal, we’re in Cal. UC Berkeley is on his list so we’ll be lucky if he doesn’t become a pot smokin’ nudist. I’m afraid it’s hard to find a university that isn’t really skewed to the left. Maybe Stanford and BYU, also on the list. I believe we’ve narrowed it down to 10 or 12.
You are loving parents willing to visit all those schools.

I was given one choice University of Texas. If I went anywhere else it was on my own dime. I went to HBU (Houston Baptist University) and had a full ride. If anyone does not believe in miracles I have a story for you.

With so many great schools in Cali, kinda surprised he isn’t staying in his home state.
We are spoiled with the weather. He’s mostly looking at California schools, and a couple of good schools in the South. I think there are only three or four with snow that have made the cut.

We are visiting the ones that are in this part of the country, but we’ll wait to see if he is accepted and what the financial picture is, before we get on any planes.

About your experience, glad to hear it. So many people get saddled with crushing debt, which makes it hard for people to start families, or be more entrepreneurial. The Mister and I were fortunate to get out of university with NO debt. I think it’s pretty hard to do these days.

An aside about colleges, it’s really hard to know when a school is worth the investment. We know a couple of people who’s children have come out of schools like Stanford (engineering major), and been recruited by large corporations for the management track, or a Princeton grad picked up by a big investment bank. So much depends on what the major is. One of our son’s friends is headed off to Yale this fall, planning to study literature. That would worry me a bit. We know of Stanford journalism majors who now have lots of debt and are waitressing.

Yeah but its making things seem larger.

This is it. What is the major, and is the school known for that major? IMO a Liberal Arts degree is pretty worthless. Engineering, Accounting, Medical, Nursing, or any job that requires a degree are the only ways to go.

Maybe we can bring our wives, and talk about medicine. My wife is a RN. You think that will work?

Well both the wife and I are RN’s still (we are Family Nurse Practitioners), BUT I do occupational medicine. So I set up the drug screening, pre-employment processing and injury management for company’s like Jacobs, Turner, Exxon etc.

I work for a Rental Real Estate Mentoring and Education company. I am one of the mentors.

If I get a pre-employment screening can we get that steak and whiskey as a business expense? I really do not need a business expense. We just need to hang out sometime.

Hey Pat – you and I are gonna be lifting soon

Shoot me an email

Hey good stuff, guys! Great that y’all got to get together.

I’ve made some VERY close relationships on T-Nation over the past 10 years, including a number of phone calls, but the only one I’ve ever met in person (a few times now) has been Mr. Chushin, who, I am pleased to report, is just as much a gentleman irl as he is online. He and I have some other meets lined up here soon, though (Mr. Push, we still on, I hope, for sometime this year?).

Pat, why on earth did I always think you had red hair?
