even at 65lbs, i see u pitch forward during the whole lift… squatmorning is inevitable like this. SIT BACK! may be difficult to get comfortable with, without a spotter, but you’ll prolly dump it once or twice getting it right. no shame in that, esp at home. [/quote]
i used to really try to sit back… but then i read somewhere NOT to sit back… so i stopped focusing on it.
i guess now i’ll try sitting back and see how that looks on video.
shit. there are just 3,000,000 different advices on how to squat and i don’t know what the fuck to go with.
I thought your second and last sets were probably your best form. I do agree with cbear in saying that you do tend to fold under the bar…as I and everyone else has done also. However, to me it seems to be a condition of your set-up. I know for me that if my set-up isn’t spot on, I ain’t makin that lift, at least not correctly. Because of the placement of the camera, I can’t see how wide your stance is…I assume it is wider than shoulder width?
The squat has always been my most intimidating lift, so I have learned a lot since training at Todd’s. First is to really get that wedge when getting under the bar, to the point where you are almost standing upright in front of it. I have then found that at lighter weight, I move my grip inward towards my neck in order to push my elbows forward which helps keep your chest up and forward and form solid. The biggest factor for me is keeping my chest up and out when I unrack the bar, the time when I usually start to get a flat back. I have learned to keep a wider stance and to lead with my butt on the way down…well not even my butt but pushing my feet out. I noticed that you bend at your knees before anything else. I think if you get the bar out of the rack, get your back arched and lock your knees to help with this BEFORE you go down, you can more consciously get down.
The squat is so fucking complicated that if my mind isn’t focused solely on every step of the lift I fuck up somewhere. For me, my upper body is far more important then my lower body in making the lift. If i get my back tight, arched, and keep my focus solid, then I can dip with my ass, push out with my knees, and push up with my hips. Again, I am such a newbie to the technical aspects of this lift, my squat is still a baby. But these are the things I have learned that have helped my squat improve.
And cbear is absolutely correct…without a spotter you feel much more vulnerable. My confidence in going ATG with heavy weight came only when I had someone standing behind me.

yah… quite a bit wider.
what’s sad is that i was 100% concentrating on leading with my butt… and not with my knees. i was really pushing my feet out. i guess i just have NO IDEA what leading with the butt feels like. i feel 100% sure it’s going before my knees… but that’s not what’s happening. it’s kinda freaky. haha
i’m definitely not getting set up tight enough. i need to arch more i think. the weight just feels so damn heavy. weak sauce.

yeah in the moment feedback would be dreamy.
not gonna happen tho. i can barely get the old lady to spot me on ONE set of bench each week.
haha. well I would almost have taken no spotter at 24 hour fitness than when I have had to ask the goons in there.
If you stance is THAT much wider, I would then try bringing it in a bit. If it is too wide one can lose the leverage in the hips, glutes, and hams and have the weight rest on the knee joints, which may explain why that can become the force of your lift. Are you able to do box squats? Those may help, especially as a warm-up movement with a dumbbell or kettlebell, keeping you arms straight down holding the weight and focusing on the back of the movement.
I do really think though, that once the upper part of the body is tight, arched, and up, the lower part can more easily fall into place.
I have found that pull thrus also work well for warm-up/activation and practice.
I add a little cream cheese and whip cream to mine…(not my squats, the snack thing, haha)
what helped me was bringing the hands in closer and sometimes physically forcing my elbows forward…you can see it in some videos…thats when they plates get to spinning, lol…
Must do some box squats. I am a big advocate for box squats. Once I included those in my training, form got better and numbers were creeping up.

i did box squats and touch n go’s for ages. but same problem… no feedback.
bobbi - to seriously answer ur question… i’m aiming for low bar, below parallel.
so there is a bit of discussion going on in a few journals as to the different varieties of squats. i guess i need to go do some research into these varieties. i don’t recall seeing specific types associated with videos i’ve seen, but maybe i haven’t look enough.
Bobbi, if you had the time, would you be so kind to give a quick run-down on this?

thanx for the videos…your dogs were funny. so, your girl is not a lifter as well?
Hes into hunting/ fishing, that sorta thing…he’ll ‘workout,’ in Jan and that will be it for the rest of the year, lol… but he’s strong for not doing shit, and he maintains his weight by watching football, playing with the kids and drinkin beer.
