I have never trained with anyone who has deadlifted more than me…at the time. I trained guys who went on to do more, but, I guess I just missed the fun.
Well, when I was 18 or 19, I was invited to an elite O lifting meet in San Francisco because I just got a full ride to Utah STate as a discus thrower and I had gone like 17 for 18 in three meets. I lifted the week ahead of time in a meet and broke all my PRs and then got invited to the next week. Of course, being young…I broke all my PRs again.
So, I snatch and then get a chance to watch the other seven lifters in the meet snatch. Bruce Wilhelm takes 402 then 407 in the snatch for a new American Record. 400 in anything is impressive, but he snapped those right overhead like it was nothing. Then, I get to open the Clean and Jerks!
So, that was it. I mean, there are others, but, you know, I was only like five feet away and in a pretty elite environment…cool, really.

Hi Dan-big fan here. I am a competitive power lifter with a best deadlift of 750 and total of 2000lbs. In your experience what are some of the best deadlifters you have seen and how do the person train? What assistance exercises get your deadlift moving? What are some of the most impressive feat of strength you have seen in training or in person? Again I really enjoy your articles, post and website!
What timing!
I was reading the OLAD thread and you mentioned a time when someone discussed training the C&J and Snatch every MWF. Here you talk about size/strength…both of which are in my current goals.
I did Power Clean/Push Press (or whatever you call it these days) and 1-Arm DB Snatches (don’t know how to do the barbell version), and now I’m thinking that I might hit the DB Snatch MTWRF with PC/PP on MWF only. Those are the only exercises I’d planned on. What do you think about this?
I have considered overhead squats VERY, VERY, VERY light as I have never done them before. Maybe putting them at the end of the Tuesday/Thursday DB Snatch only? Am I way off base here?
Thanks,
Matthew

For size, snatch five times a week. For strength, clean five times a week. I did lots and lots and lots of shrugs in my life, but they were never bigger than when I was in Junior College training with Dick Notmeyer. My t-shirts kept my ears warm…
So, sure, they are excellent…but the quicker stuff worked better for me.

I know you and Pavel are friends, and I have his book, PTP. In it, it goes into ‘brief’ detail about the Bear. Since you know him and talk to him, my question is this…Doing the bear, should you up the top lift each workout, or stay with the same weight for a week at a time, assuming a 6-8 week cycle and 3 to 4 days training a week? I like improving, however slowly, but I don’t like failing, kinda a mental thing. The rest of the Bear I understand.

Six foot, 225-255 depending on breakfast. What do you mean “peaked out?” I’m one good wind from being back on top.
For me, my goal has been for the past five years, to maintain my Junior College throws and lifts on bare bones training:
Snatch 230+
Clean 300+
Discus 160+
So basically your goal is “maintenance” as opposed to progression or advancement correct?
I guess my point is that after a while we all reach our human potential w/weights, so where do you go after that? I mean that there’s a point when you can’t keep adding more and more weight right?
By peaked out-I thought I read one of your posts in another thread, that you yourself had said that you kind of “peaked” with the major lifts.

Dan,
I didn’t mean it like that and in fact I meant no disrespect really, but damn you are funny:)
That dry sense of humor is one of the reasons you are so popular here:)
Where is the remote and some twinkies…

Can’t find your powerpoint of the MLB diet. I remember you wrote something about focusing on one bodypart while dieting. I can’t remember if that was two days/week bodypart training and two days/week maintainance on everything else. Help please.

DJ “add more plates, get stronger, shut up” awesome quote
Aside from your own and this wondeful site, any advice for me trying to learn more and more about O-lifts and how to perform then improve them? Right now I’m reading bits and pieces of everything
It is the “dolfzine” article in my “Old Stuff” area…
Yep, two days a week on an area you consider “weak,” a general leg day, a general full body or upper body day…long walk or hike or bike one other day. Those general days don’t have to be much either. I think it worked for me because I found my weak part…my guns (they were around nineteen inches without a pump) needed some work so I could impress babes wearing my muscle shirt, clown pants, and doo rag.

Over at crossfit, they have a message board with a lot of good stuff about the lifts, including net videos and places to buy more stuff. Search for “Tommy Kono’s book.”

How’s your training coming together for the Weight Pentathlon?
You’ve got me interested in giving it a try myself. Although I’ve been training for the Highland Games, I threw the shot and disc halfway decent last week at a local open track meet (41’ and 121’), with no practice in the disc (I usually throw the shot/disc in our state games every summer). I’ve thrown the javelin before, but I’ve never thrown the hammer or the weight throw. So my question is: how hard is it to pick up the track hammer throw, at least to get a reasonable mark? Is there a web site demonstrating a simple one or two turn throw for beginners?
Okay, here it is: I throw something everyday…usually a little bit of javelin…and it is going very well. I really tossed the discus well this weekend.
For hammer stuff, there is a lot of great British sites. If you type in “hammer throw” in yahoo.com and click on videos, you will get some good stuff. Also, in some of the early Get Up newsletters, there are two great introductions by Todd Taylor. Also, buy Yuri Sedyk’s video…or come to discus camp… discususa.com and hang with me.
Although, it isn’t really safe to let people know that you know me…

Bump this and add that I am also seriously considering training for my first Scottish Games in Sept which is why I thought the one-arm db snatch would be appropriate.

Sorry, missed that…must have been buried. Yes, I like that quite a bit, it really looks like MOST of what I have done for my career: focus on a couple of things and really go after it…
Matthew9v9 wrote:

Dan,
Great D-Tap interview. I loved your tip about if you’re feeling down or depressed, get outside. I’ve been in a rut lately, I’m going out in the parking lot of my gym with the Famers Impliments Loaded up tommorow to do some Deadlifts :-)… Thanks again.

Thank you sir.
Time to execute the plan then.
Matthew
That is the problem with good plans…you need to execute them!

You know, I had a “low” time in my life and I’m telling you…the exercise saved me. Get outside and train when you can!
