Distal Clavicle Osteolysis Strikes Again

So, I went through this about 8 years ago, had the surgery, and eventually returned to normal activity. It took me out of PL’ing for a while, and I have just started competing again this year. Well, now the other shoulder is affected. My ortho actually told me it could happen back then, and I kind of knew in my gut that it would, and here it is. So, this time I am trying to be smarter and wiser, and get it addressed sooner than later. Last time, I tried to push through it, self-medicate, etc. . . and ended up prolonging my recovery.

So, hopefully this time it will work out better since I am going at it early. Anyone else had it occur in both shoulders? In the meantime, focusing on squats, deadlifts, and keeping my triceps strong. I will keep the board posted in case anyone is or will go through it too.

So, I met with my ortho yesterday, who is a sports-med specialist for shoulders. It is what I expected. He did not BS me. He said the best bet was just to go in and fix it. He said even if I removed the offensive movements (mostly benching) that it would return as soon as I started doing it again.

I am also a perf. coach, so I am coaching all sorts of movements everyday, and he said best bet… fix it. So, we are going in June 1st to take care of it. He said in about 10% of folks that have it present in one shoulder, will have it show up in the other. So, since I have about 3 weeks, I am switching up my training to 3-4 days per week, trying to get my body ready to recover from surgery as quickly as possible.

Tossing in a bit of intervals too. I am hoping I am a bit wiser than I was 8 years ago, and can be smarter about my recovery and get back at it sooner. It is a strange deal. Last time I was back doing overhead work withing 4 weeks, but honestly could not bench for a year without substantial pain and nerve issues. So, we shall see. If anyone is interested, I will keep the board posted.

So, surgery done. I also managed to have a torn labrum. Sucks, but it happens. Long recovery ahead. Have my one week check today, will know more then.

I was just diagnosed with DCO. Had first injection yesterday. Originally started as a football injury that I worked through the pain. Went from 385 for reps on flat bench to pain with 135. Can’t overhead press. Pushups are painful. Limited ROM on all pulls. So I’m doing the hardest thing ever and stopping any pressing exercises for the next 6-8 weeks. Please keep me posted with updates on your recovery. Has your Dr said anything about being able to press heavy weight again? As bad as it sounds I can’t imagine life without heavy bench or dips. I feel for you buddy. And wish you a swift, full recovery.
