I know there are some other SG1 fans on the boards and I was wondering if the cancellation rumor was true or not. Also, it seemed like now was the time for shows to start doing D2DVD marketing. I’m not sure how they’ll finance without commercials…but it seems like the next step. Fewer restraints, etc.
Anyway, this is a recent Bad Signal mailing from author Warren Ellis, who spends alot of time speculating on the medium delivery:
You’ve heard me talk a bit about
D2DVD over the last little while.
It’s reported today that STARGATE
SG-1, the venerable sf franchise
that got put down by Sci-Fi Channel
after ten years, is getting a new
lease of life: direct to DVD. MGM
are funding two D2DVD SG-1 movies.
Now, the Cuban/Soderbergh DVD
movies going day-and-date with
theatre openings and downloads or
whatever were a pretty big thing
for D2DVD: but hampered by the
fact that so many people thought it
was an attack (which it was). There
are no antagonists to SG-1 going
D2DVD. It’s going to be a far better
yardstick of what a fan audience
and an early-adopter audience will
go for. And ultimately it marks out
D2DVD as a home for something
other than the equivalent of MANT
or MANSQUITO.
MGM stated when SG-1 got bounced
from Sci-Fi that they wanted to
keep the show alive, so finding some
kind of budget wasn’t the hassle
that others would have. But the
DVD will provide numbers and demos
as ammunition for people who want
to follow. Maybe one day John
Rogers will get his dream of putting
out a tv show direct to DVD.
The Ultimate Avengers movie that went straight to DVD did fairly well also (They are working on Dr. Strange to follow). If people start paying more attention to them, it will eventually be a viable market…unlike the “B-movie” stigma that is traditionally associated with movies that don’t make it the theaters.

I honestly think this’ll be the next step, along with overall on-demand programming. What I’m not sure about is how they’ll get the funding if they cut out commercials. I’m thinking that they may have to end up built in…we can get what we want to see, when we want to see it vs. being stuck to a time-slot, but we’ll probably still have to sit through some sort of advertising.
I also think that changing the public opinion of direct-to-dvd will make the medium a target for content creators outside the industry. Which could be great or terrible, but definitely interesting.

Richard Dean Anderson was vital to the show. Once the Goa’uld were concord the series was pretty much over.
They squashed them like grapes?
Damn, I have to get caught up.
See, I used to watch it when it first started, then missed alot of it until it came to SciFi. But I never got back into it. Then, when Anderson left and Farscape vets Ben Browder and Claudia Black came onto the show (Farscape was a favorite of mine), I thought I’d give it another shot.
So far, I’ve enjoyed it and though it works on its own, it’s made me want to see what I missed in all the previous seasons. I think the mythology set up is great and I like where its currently going, but I guess there weren’t enough viewers like myself to keep it going. Cast changes can definitely kill a show, even if its still good.

Ben Browder was cool as hell and is what made Farscape watchable as opposed to being a puppet nightmare. I am not sure I like the fact that they just threw them into Stargate. Then again, I don’t watch Stargate very often at all.
Stargate is an awesome show sometimes, and other times it sucks Star-Treks socialist/pacifist o-ring. They cancelled it? That sogt to be right up there with HBO cancelling Deadwood, a real smoove move.

Yeah, I’ve seen references to Browder being a modern Lee Majors. Seems pretty accurate.
With Stargate, I guess Black had played a character in the series before and Browder has been doing a good job with his character. They’ve also kept the Farscape references to a minimum and Black’s character isnt focused on Browder’s, but they still have good chemistry.
I like the idea of direct to DVD movies but they will automatically become b-movies because of it, but who cares I like a lot of b-movies
I think Richard dean Anderson did a great job but he was getting too old to play such an active role. I also think the Ori make a great new enemy and is a really clever way to bring the whole ascending thing into the show more. I will keep watching as long as they don?t get rid of Amanda tapping.
