what is the difference between using a pronated, supinated, or alternating grip on a deadlift?
Alternating grip is the strongest. Supinated grip exposes you to the highest risk of bicep injury.
What about straps? Should they ever be used?

Only on heavy singles or the last set for the day, if your gripping strength is the only factor that is limiting your pulling ability.

Personal Preference. When you’re doing low reps, you’ll probably find that using a mixed grip will do you just fine. But if you’re doing Deadlifts for Reps the aid you get from straps will be greater.
Just remember, strongmen deadlift-type events pretty much always allow straps and are done for reps. Fully geared powerlifting meets don’t allow straps. Jay and Ronnie use straps. Arnold and Franco did not.
If you follow a bodybuilding split, you might want to use straps on all days but arm day and work your grip on arm day.

Depends on what and why you are training.
If you are a powerlifter, I would say no (usually, there are always exceptions). If you are a bodybuilder and grip is limiting what you can lift on deads, absolutely. If you are a strongman, partly depends on if your upcoming contest allows them and if you feel you need to or not.
