Difference Between Sumo and Convential

Slightly off topic, fellers, but I have a question for you men in suits (since I have no experience there).

If I’m pulling in the 570 range raw what should the varying plys hypothetically do for my 1RM were I to acquire one?

And if I suited up and spent some time pulling the heavier weights should my raw 1RM directly benefit?
I might get 60 lbs out of a single-ply suit, pulling sumo. My coach pulls twice as much as I do, also sumo, but doesn’t get a lot out of a suit. He pulled 629 at Master Worlds (equipped) this year missing a 667 attempt, and 611 raw at the Arnold, missing a 639 attempt.

I don’t think it makes me a stronger raw lifter - if anything, because the suit helps me through my raw weak point (the floor), it makes me a weaker raw lifter.

I get about 80lbs out of a suit pulling sumo. Like PMPM, it helps me through my weak spot off the floor and allows me to maximizes my strength, the top of the lift.

I don’t think it makes me a weaker raw lifter because I train raw a lot switching back and forth and will use accessory training to address my weakness off the floor.

However, there is a big spread on what people can get from a suit deadlifting depending on where their strengths lie.

I’ve only pulled in a suit conventional a few times. It sucks. It’s like a dead stop before you even touch the bar. I’ve had more success trying without a belt.

The short answer is to try and see

I pulled Sumo for the first time on Monday with the intention to actually work up to a 1RM. In the past I’ve used it as part of a warm up or on my deload weeks just to try something different with very light weight. My conventional 1RM is 425, with the Sumo I barely managed to get 275 up. I chalk it up to not being used to the movement pattern, but I was a tad concerned about the large disparity.

Long story short, the part of my Pos. Chain where the hamstring meets the glute is still sore in a way I’ve never experienced. Not even GHRs or GMs have given me this type of DOMS. It’s starting to let up a bit today though.

After reviewing that chart, I do believe I’m better suited for conventional regardless

I’m guessing 10-50 lbs or so.

Shucks, I don’t even wear a belt. Not even for 1RM’s.
MY best with a metal king deadlifter is 605 at about 205 bodyweight push. I’m not sure what i get out of it, but I know I keep my hips down better with one. My friend thinks fifty. I think it might be less. I put it on when i start pulling over 515 now. If you go to my youtube channel you can see me pull 515 x 3 and my hips are a little high. I pulled 540 for 2 with my deadlift suit and I kept my hips down more.

The 540 x 2 was fast and easy. I’m thinking 5-8 reps would have gone. i took down the straps for the speed sets of 455 x 3 after the heavy double.

The youtube channel is irondoc1963 btw.
540 deadlift x 2 - YouTube.

That’s the 540 x 2.

515 x 3. Didn’t get the hips down enough on the reps.

The 540 x 2 was done 1/13/12. The 515 x 3 was done about two weeks before. After each heavy set Josh has me do speed pulls with short rest. After 515 x 3 it was 425 x 3, 8 sets one minute rests.
after 540 x 2 it was 455 x 3, 90 seconds rests for five sets. this week it’s 560 x 2, 465 x 3, five sets, 90 seconds rest.

BTW, I don’t put my suit on very snug. It’s very easy to get down to the bar. I like the tight feeling at the bottom. It’s a great reminder to get my hips down.

I used to max out conventional. I think the last was 350. Recently I maxed 460 sumo. Tried it out, and it was way easier than conventional for me.
