Did I Grip The Bar Wrong?

Hey all,

I have a weak grip that just started to affect my deadlift a few weeks ago. So to attack it, I started doing farmers walks and I’m just finishing being able to close the trainer CoC for reps, and the #1 is on it’s way from eliteFTS.

To help develop grip strength evenly I thought I’d switch to using an overhand hook grip to do deadlifts. Yesterday I tried this and I worked up to a max set of 5 reps at 295 lbs (I know it’s not much to the big guys, but I’m a newb).

I know it’s supposed to hurt the first month or so when you lift, and that’s fine, but my thumb has been tingling and numb for a day now. Kind of like when your leg falls asleep, and you walk around and get that “pins and needles” feeling. Is that normal? If it is I can deal with it, but I wanted to make sure I gripped the bar correctly. Thumb wrapped around the bar first, then the other four fingers around the thumb. So the bar is pressing right on the thumb and therefore directly into the other four fingers.

Did I do it correct, or did I crush all the nerves in my thumb, or am I supposed to crush all the nerves in my thumb and therefore that’s why the pain goes away in a month? Thanks!

Yes sounds like you did it right and yes you crushed your thumb. Thats part of it. I ill only pull it out when needed heavy ass farmers for distance etc.

have you done a mixed grip with plenty of chalk??

I started out using a double overhand grip, and found I lost grip at 275 lbs. Since I started doing farmers walks and CoC work and bought chalk, I can hold on to my new max at 295 without having to worry about dropping it.

My train of thought was this:

In order to increase my grip evenly, I’d use double overhand so that they were both gripping the same way.

Then, I thought I’d switch to hook grip to get that slight increase in holding ability while still having my hands both positioned the same way.

In the long run, when it appears my deadlift is being limited by my grip, and my grip strength is actually at a much better place than it is now, I’d switch to pulling with a mixed grip.

Do you think I’d be better off just using a mixed grip now from the start?

What are your goals for your DL etc.

I personally dont see letting grip be a limiter on my DL progress when I can do something as easy as use a mixed grip and still work on grip strength.

Just use a overhand grip on your lighter sets and switch to mixed once it is a problem

Siirius,
you do know what a mixed grip is don’t you (not trying to be insultig, you said you were a noob). 300lb DL with overhand grip is pretty good for a beginner.
