Not really. But I haz to say it since he plays for the evil empire :P. But seriously, Mr. November is without a doubt one of the best to ever play for the Yankees and a guaranteed future HOFer.
But how much does he have left?
As I was watching my beloved Blue Jays whoop the Yankees at Yankee Stadium 2 out of the 3 games, one of the commentators mentioned something I had not realized was coming up. Derek Jeter is only under contract until the end of the season and will turn 37 during next season.
How many years will the Yankees actually sign this guy for? Can he really continue to effectively play such a rugged position at age 37+??
Some of his 2010 stats are:
BA HR RBI OBP SLG FD%
.280 9 48 .341 .394 .989
He’s still putting up good numbers and is on pace to reach 3000 hits…
EDIT: How long can this guy keep going for??
They’ll sign him for 2 probably … regardless he’ll retire a Yankee w/o a doubt and be a HOFer …
but FUCK THE YANKEES
You guys can suck BAWLS and our 27 championships. Ya small town, sister fucking bastards. I’m looking at you Polo!!
Evil Empire FTW!!

I don’t think he will be ready to retire in 2; unless he’s one of those rare players who wants to go out while still relevant and not limp to the finish line.
My guess is 4 years 48-60 million depending on whether he gives the yanks a “hometown discount”. Obviously those numbers are ridiculously high for a player in Jeter’s position, but what he brings to the franchise more than makes up for it. Plus, the yanks have proven they have zero ceiling when it comes to contracts. 2 more years at short and then he platoons in the OF until retirement.

I think 4 years, 50 or so million is about accurate, but I don’t see Jeter moving to the OF.

I’m not totally sold on the OF either, I just don’t see how you can justify keeping him at short the closer he gets to 40. He’s one of the best when it comes to reading how the ball is coming off the bat, but his legs are getting old.

I don’t think so. The last time i saw him running the bases, which was during the WS, he looked like he was still moving very well. I’m doubtful about the read off the bat. The scouting report on Jeter has been he doesn’t take a very efficient route to get to where the ball is going. Other Major league Shortstops make plays Jeter doesn’t make.
I agree Jeter retires as a Yankee and I think he will stay at SS as long as he possibly can. I don’t think he wants to risk Alex moving over to his spot.

Sweet nothings?? Your a sick puppy, Polo
One of the classiest person of all time. I can see him playing till 41 like cal Ripkin J.R. I used to hate these guys growing up but now I don’t really mind if they keep winning. Just don’t fuck with my Angels!!

I don’t watch much AL baseball and rarely catch a Yanks game so I can only go off of what I have heard and am certainly not arguing your point.
It was my impression that Jeter was good a positioning himself based on pitcher/hitter match-up (which looking at it now is significantly different than reading the ball off the bat. my bad). I suppose that was more the point I was trying to make; he has the baseball IQ to continue at short but is getting to the point where that is no longer enough. (this is why talking sports at a bar is much easier. There is a lot more leeway when you fuck up!!)
I will say that there is a difference between speed on the base path and quickness on defense. Being a Phillies fan, I watched a lot of the stuff that Pedro Feliz pulled off at 3rd last year and while he was not lighting up the base path, he had great quickness to the ball.
So do you think he just retires when he can no longer play short then?
The thing is, where will he go once he can’t sufficiently field shortstop? He doesn’t seem to fit the prototypical PH type player.

He will take HGH then become a designated hitter.
