I have had some mild discomfort at what I believe is the deltiod tuberosity ( halfway on the outside of the upper arm, right where the medial delta ends). This discomfort is now pretty painful (at the end of a deload week?). The pain is most severe when my hand is behind my back and pulling (think pulling up your pants). I have had minor issues with this shoulder before but this doesn’t actually hurt at the shoulder. I felt no accute pain during my training. I have been doing some research online, but haven’t found much.
The deltoid tuberosity is the typical referral pattern for the supraspinatus. Could be the infraspinatus secondary to its relative continuity with the supraspinatus. Could also be the long head of the biceps as well. They are all very close in proximity. If one is agitated and inflammation is present all structures can become provocative/irritable.
Ruling out cervical spine referral would be beneficial.
Thanks O, I saw a pt who said supraspinatus tendinitis, and really can’t afford to do much else unless it gets a lot worse (logical right ;). I have laid off any real upper body work and have been running smolov jr. , for squats, to keep me sane. As far as the diagnosis, who knows. I seem to be able to do many of the provactive tests without pain, though a resisted lift off test definitely causes pain (indicates subscapularis?) Honestly I feel like I could bench heavy, for me, tomorrow (probably test it with some light weights soon) and not feel pain, but horizontal rows hurt at the end range just with a light band. I have seen improvement already, but was hoping for a little more confidence in the diagnosis so that I might plan how to avoid/fix this in the future. I live in a rural area and have to use the resources available, although I have considered making the three hour drive to see an ART practitioner.
