Violence is a necessary evil at times, but being the “victim” of verbal insults is not one of those times no matter the subject of those insults. It comes down to being in control of one’s own emotions and not being controlled by someone else’s needling.

The OP lost control and thus had no business using violence. Control over one’s emotional attachment and reactions to stimuli is what sets us apart from animals; some of us anyway.

Having said that, it’s all context. I would not expect a kid to have the same type of control an adult should have.

If kid A tells kid B that he (or someone he loves/cares for) is gay/kike/nigger/, I’d expect the kid B to snap at some point and beat the crap out of kid A.

Then, I’d expect parents and school officials to punish kid A, and probably kid B (depending on the severity of the beating.) And I’d hope that A and B eventually grow out of that shit, learn their lessons and become not-so-retarded adults.

With adults, I’d expect B to be the better man and walk away (and pray that A eventually runs into somebody that doesn’t give a shit about being the better man and shuts him up for good.)
