Decent Metal?

I haven’t read through this entire thread, but I wanted to mention that The Sword are a very good metal band. Check 'em out.

If you want to listen to good metal, go to a metal forum like smnnews.com/board or metal-archives.com

You’re only going to get shitty bands in threads like this.

I don’t think he’s looking for our kind of metal.

Prolly just more nu-metal.

Yeah… that’s about right. Anyway, I think we still have the Death Metal thread around GAL somewhere if we really wanted to dig it up.

Just let him discover stuff for himself. It’s the same as with any non-standard activity… Your tastes change as you gain experience, your brain starts deciphering what’s going on etc.

I doubt they will get “it”

Haha, I actually saw them live last summer. They’re incredibly boring and uninspired in my opinion.

You know, they started that whole sound.

The incredibly boring and uninspired sound?

Seriously, I wasn’t aware of them being pioneers of… anything?

It’s all about the wiggerslam death sound d00d.

Actually I have soft spot for slam, so sue me? Haha

But to more decent metal

Jason Becker - Serrana (I consider his work metal)

Nevermore - Born

eXodus - Toxic Waltz

Overkill - Elimination

Channel Zero - Inspiration To Violence

Annihilator - Alison Hell

Sanctuary - Future Tense

Dark Angel - Time Does Not Heal

and this is for people who want to listen to a different take on metal all together

Ephel Duath - The Passage

Jason Becker is the shit. ever see the youtube of him playing Malmsteen with his guitar between his legs…at a high school talent show?

Damn, pisses me off every time I think about him having ALS.

Jason Becker:

Blackstar:

Serrana:

(wow)

Paul Gilbert (another of my favorite shredders):

What about grunge? metal or not?

AIC, Soundgargen, both have metal roots.

That’s where I agree. I know everyone’s got their own interests and tastes in music, which is fine, but it’s ignorant when people discount the insane musicianship of some death metal bands simply because of the vocals.

It makes me wonder if people are actually more interested in hearing good music or hearing black-eye lined people whine about being picked on in high school.
In my previous post, I didn’t discount the insane musicianship. I said I like the music. I just don’t like the vocals. It almost seems like the music is wasted because of the singing.

I am going to try and listen to all of the recommendations to find what I like. If you can point me to a band that has decent vocals with the amazing musicianship that most of the bands, it would be appreciated.

In my opinion, they’re just great hard rock bands. I never really saw them as metal. I’m sure someone will disagree with me.

You made a thread titled “Decent Metal” and then started whining when people posted decent metal bands instead of the hot topic pop bullshit you were looking for?

Back to the topic at hand, one thing about my life that I regret is not having a video of Detty and I singing along to this in my truck with Buckeye Girl sitting in between us laughing her ass off.

yeah i guess i cant be as hardcore as a song about “runes” and traveling through lakes with viking helmets on pretending i live in the fucking 17th century. thats B.A. dude.

do those CD’s come with free Magic The Gathering cards too?
Wait, so because youre too fucking stupid to distinguish retarded power metal from death metal, then its all the same shit?

Thats a slightly larger leap of faith than me assuming that, because of your posts on this board, youre a snot nosed punk who thinks his community college classes are hard and that his $200 jeans with shit my grandma has on her curtains sewed onto them make him legit. Youre kind of like the 30 year old fat chick hanging out at the mall in her new kids on the block t-shirt. You missed the bus man, listening to numetal and whining about how much of a fuck up you are was cool ten years ago.

By the way, that song I posted was about zombies. Most of that album is about zombies. How the fuck can you not like songs about zombies?

Not Metal.

What constitutes as decent vocals is your opinion. Distorted vocals take skill as well.

If you want “clean” vocals, a few of my favorites are Tool, Opeth(half of it has growling though), Katatonia, Devin Townsend, Riverside, Blotted Science(no vocals :P), and… that’s all I can think of for now.

Nu Metal: I like the innovators when they were new and heavy and bad ass, but when everyone jumped on the bandwagon the genre sucked.

Korn: I dig the first 2.

Spineshank was heavy.

Deftones first one was cool.

And that’s about it for me and nu-metal.

When Korn released the Family Values CD with Follow The Leader (which sucked btw) the genre soon died.

It ain’t easy doing gutterals, growls, shrieks etc.

I like:
Slayer - Raining Blood

Slayer - War Ensemble

Slayer - South of Heaven

I basically listen to Slayer when lifting, and I listen to Tool (which is better) for everything else. I obviously listen to many more bands, but those are the two major ones.

What you need is some old school thrash metal.

Megadeth
Metallica
Testament
JUDAS PRIEST
IRON MAIDEN

For some newer metals

Iced Earth
Lamb of God
Arch Enemy
Behemoth (Death Metal)
3 Inches of Blood
Wintersun
Ensiferum

Right. When I was big into playing bass, I had tried some of these different methods. Shrieks aren’t bad, but growls and gutterals tear the FUCK out of my throat.

But none of it takes skill, remember, cos it’s all babyfuck and Magic: The Gathering. (Idiot)

I was surprised that they even have vocal coaches, to learn to do all that without destroying their vocal chords.

Thanks for the recommendations Vegg. I have been listening to Tool for a long time, and they are awesome. I checked out the other bands and enjoyed them, especially Blotted Science.

I guess I should have clarified what I meant by decent vocals. I don’t mind distortion, I just think the gutterals and growls can be used too much. To each his own, I guess.

This song was played on the Pandora metal station today, and I thought it was good.

Arch Enemy-“Bridge of Destiny”

Hell yeah, blotted science! Shame that Bobby Jarzombek didn’t join his brother and do the drums on that one… These days he seems to stick to commercial bands and easy-to-play stuff… Damn waste of talent.
