Death Metal

And if I go to Skeletonwitch tomorrow, I’ll actually take my camera. Blackened thrash metal is the best. However, they’re playing with Children of Bodom or whatever, fuck that. And the tickets are in the 20s, fuck that too.

Both albums bring it extremely hard. They’re kind of different in their own ways, but yes. Warbringer is some of the better thrash I believe I’ve ever heard.

BTW, I know Skaz and I were discussing this, but you guys REALLY fucking owe it to yourselves to pick up “Descend Into Depravity,” Dying Fetus’ new album. I’m sold that it’s one of the best death metal albums I’ve listened to in some time, and they just KILL it.

I’ll check it out later tonight.

I’m listening to Death’s Symbolic album right now, my God it is perfect.

Too bad that there isn’t really a successor band for Death around… Symbolic, Individual Thought Patterns, Sound of Perseverance, Spiritual Healing… All great albums which could use a follow-up with a bit more odd-time and polyrhythms and a more modern production (though I gotta say it’s amazing how Death managed to make Symbolic and Perseverance sound so good without much in the way of finances and equipment).

Chuck’s death was to death metal what Elvis’ death was to rock’n’roll, imo… Except that you get a billion Elvis look and sing -alikes.

Oh yeah, new Immortal album available from certain sources cough.

Only listened to it once and was kind of disappointed… Songs and melodies just didn’t cut it, but maybe it’ll grow on me… Bit different production compared to Sons Of Northern Darkness, but the rest is pretty much the same (just somehow not quite as interesting to me).

Also, Nile’s new album disappointed me… Oh, it has some slightly more technical guitar-work here and there, bit more experimentation on the drums going on (2 snares used etc, but I thought that he stole the alternate snare blast idea directly from a Derek Roddy vid lol) though I really felt that the guys are running out of riffing ideas… Thought several times “hey, you used almost that exact same riff on previous albums”. The solos also weren’t nearly as great/epic (with one exception I think) compared to Annihilation Of The Wicked, and there wasn’t much Doom going on compared to Ityphallic (or whatever it was called). Also, the lyrics are kind of gay.

Vocal work isn’t too great either, with a few exceptions…

Oh, one thing I noticed: For like the first time EVER you can actually hear the double bass properly (i.e. as more than a high-pitched click with a tiny bit of bass that doesn’t seem to cling to it), but it’s only for a second or two at the beginning (after the first sample) on “hittite dung incantations” (or so). Hey, I thought it was worth mentioning as Nile’s Double-Bass production is generally terrible.

The bass guitar seemed a lot more audible at times than on previous albums, even though I played the album on the laptop and listened via headphones… Gotta check it out in the car.

Overall, the album is somewhat faster again, but doesn’t do it nearly as well as Annihilation. Samples were a little annoying at times, too.

Too bad, maybe next time. Perhaps they’ll come back in force like Jay Cutler

I’m a recent convert, just made the transition like last week. what gets played the most through my headphones has been Dying Fetus’s new album Descend Into Depravity, this has been the heaviest band I’ve listned to so far. I started with Cannibal Corpses album iviseration plaque and the last 3 albums from arch enemy.

This album embodies everything that is death metal man, are you kidding me?!

Here’s some thrash metal from Ireland. Gama Bomb - Final Fight

The Dying Fetus album is really good. I normally don’t listen to the harder death metal (i.e. Cannibal Corpse) but Descend into Desparity is the shiz.

Yeah man I know where you are coming from. Obituary sort of comes close but not really, Death still has that “old school death metal” feel that I really like, but a lot of bands are more progressive. I always liked Chuck’s vocals.

His death was messed up. That cancer story is really heart-breaking. You are definitely right with the Elvis comparison.

I’ve just been listening to that album for so many years, and hear the same praise all the time, but I’m just “yeah it’s a great album” at this point.

Then again, I do prefer Human over Symbolic.

And this new album will be metal, or am I wrong? Why is he going in this direction? I expected him to further distance himself from the genre after what he said about it while in prison. Plus the fact that black metal is dead (and it was him who killed it)! Seriously, what are the odds that his new album, if its black metal, will even come close to what his first four albums were? Not very good because a big reason why Burzum’s black metal was so special was its spirit, which, as I said before but is worth repeating, is now certainly dead.

Oops, I forgot to mention “Human”.

Yes, you’re right…the new album is supposed to be metal even though he said he would never go back in that direction. Not sure about the reasons behind his change of mind, but it won’t matter. Varg has so many fanboy followers that it’ll sell regardless. Look at how many other bands have been ripping off his style since those early years. I’ll be curious to see what he’s able to pull off though.
