I saw Opeth, at the Boston House of Blues last night. They played too many songs off of Watershed for my personal taste haha. They played The Lotus Eater though so that makes it okay. They also went back and played stuff from Morningrise, Still Life, Blackwater Park, and Deliverance so I was a pretty happy boy. They did a “ballad” section which was kind of lame. Not many of the good ones, IMO.
Oh and Enslaved ruled but the tom sound was fucking horrible where I was. I was hoping they would play Path to Vanir but they didn’t. Still pretty good.
For some reason wiggers like Opeth now and tried every opportuanity they had to start mosh pits, even during the acoustic sections. Epic fail.[/quote]
LOL
Oh well…
Got a hold of 2 Scarve albums (who the fuck would call a “death” band… Scarve!? Them French people are weird).
First is irradiant, which I liked overall. Even had one of the meshuggah guitarists help with one of the songs, and it sounds sort of like… old-school Meshuggah. Cool.
Dirk Verbeuren is a better drummer than I expected after all his soilwork material…
Even got the meshuggah-style down pat… Sounded slightly more interesting than Haake’s own stuff (on the meshuggaesque song, I mean, not on the rest of the album necessarily), but don’t quote me on it… I only listened to the whole album once thus far.
Second album is their “new” one from 07… The Undercurrent.
Only listened to it via pc and decent headphones, but I must say the other album sounded better overall. Had less bass in the kickdrums, but huh… The kickdrums drowned out everything else a bit on The Undercurrent, but still had no bite. Maybe it’ll sound more balanced over my Hi-Fi + Sennheiser Audiophile-headphones.
Suffice to say I didn’t really get much out of that album, despite it’s many similarities to irradiant…
Oh yeah guys, I keep forgetting about the damn review thread, so fuck it, if one of you can come up with a witty intro-post, start the thread…
I’m spending too much time thinking about how to do that damn bb article/post/thread, and am overall busy enough
Got a bunch of more interesting albums, esp. for Detty and anyone interested in more than death metal:
- A German jazz-rock/metal band:
Panzerballett.
Their album “Starke Stuecke” (ue=ü) is pretty amsuing, mostly semi-covers and such, but cool.
Got the pink panther theme on there, etc, which is the opener. That and the second track which’s name escapes me at the moment are pretty damn cool by themselves.
Second track actually features what I’m assuming is some neat remote hi-hat pedal-work (didn’t bother counting to see if he’s playing 2 over 3 or whatever, I don’t think so, but it’s the same style you see Derek Roddy doing on faceless ones and other such HE tracks… Though the drummer here may be using one hand on a hi-hat to replace one foot, not sure).
Didn’t bother much with the other tracks yet, but Zickenterror (well, bitch-terror is a rough translation, bitch as in “that girl sure is a bitch”), while sounding kind of annoying, has some real interesting vocal performances… Basically a guy and his girl fighting over a bunch of stuff like how he should clean up more or whatever. Sounds bavarian, dialect-wise, so I don’t even understand all of it.
The interesting part is how the vocalists manage to stay in the rhythm etc…
Well, that’s all I can say about the album thus far.
Ok, now here comes an album that has 1 track on it I keep listening to again and again, don’t even know anything about the rest of the album yet:
Dark Suns - Grave Human Genuine - Flies In Amber
That track is great, doomy sort of, with some middle-eastern stuff going on, intricate drum parts though not flashy at all, and they’re not just using guitars as lead instruments there…
Singer sounds a bit like the nevermore guy but less… Forced/annoying at times (hey, I like much of Warrel’s stuff, but he can sometimes sound so whiney…)… And a better death-voice imo. (or IS this Warrel?)
9+ minute song, solo near the end… Love it overall, though it took me several listens to get into it.
And finally… I think SSC saw them live? Obscura… Featuring the old necrophagist drummer… Old? Nah, he’s like 22 or so, but yeah. Hannes Grossman I think was his name.
Also with the old Necrophagist guitarist or bassist or one of them, anyway.
Less overall melody than necro on their last album, but some really cool stuff there… First track is great (anticosmic overload or so) plus a few others, haven’t listened to this as much yet.
Bass guitar is very audible most of the time, though I’d guess that you want to listen to this via headphones and not the car-stereo as many of the bass lines aren’t really “bassy” but more in the higher frequencies?
Not certain, haven’t tested that yet…
Not sure about the overall level of performance here yet, bass-wise, detty might want to have a listen though…
Man, typing stuff while eating is annoying.
/edited the first part.
