Death Metal

For whatever it’s worth… I really like Brain Drill. I hadn’t heard their first EP/album at all, but I thought Apocalyptic Feasting overall was pretty solid.

That being said, their style is my bread and butter.

Yeah well, I guess I’m an overly-critical person at times when it comes to music. I’ve just sort of heard it all before a thousand times, you know?
Of course they’re not bad at all, just not really exciting enough… I dunno… As I’ve said, I only listened to one song and that is hardly enough to really be able to judge them.
Ah, certainly. They definitely haven’t done anything that’s original or covered any uncharted ground… a reason why I was debating reviewing the album. Solid, but if you’re looking for new territory of death metal, don’t even bother.

Yeah, it’s a case of Necrophagist syndrome…but at least with the other bands from that small Cali scene, it hasn’t been affecting them as much, which is good because I’m not a fan of OM, I feel even their tech riffs are too cookie cutter for my taste.

Hmm, Necrophagist (usually) do have transitions and a surprisingly simple song-structure (or at least one that doesn’t ever get changed much).

Imo a lot of their riffs are more interesting than what you see most other bands using, somehow more identifiable.

Oh well…

What do you think about Brain Drill.
I’ve only heard one song (apocalyptic feasting) and must say that while it’s fun to listen to once, it’s also kind of… Hmm.
I can’t really call that tech. I mean, it’s fast, but that’s it.
Nothing complicated about it actually, and the drummer is really boring… Fast blast followed by fast double-bass followed by fast blast, but with both kickdrums, some snare rolls in-between, that’s about it…

I think some bands misunderstand the whole tech-thing

Though they’re still far from abysmal (most of the base-riffs from that song are… Colorless though. Weak production doesn’t help any, although it’s fairly clear at other times during the song)Maybe their other songs are more varied?
Oh, I mean Necrophagist syndrome as in “OMG THAT BAND IS TECHNICALLY AWESOME! I WANNA WRITE RIFFS, MEEDLEYZ, AND SOLOZ LIKE MUHHAHAHAMED TOOZ” proceeds to write technical riffs that go no where

As for Brain drill, Terrible fast wankery album is terrible fast wankery album, and the production is terrible. Sorry if anyone likes 'em, that’s just how I feel.
detazathoth wrote:

I don’t think our musical tastes are different at all, I just come from a background of being around Jazz/Latin/Classical musicians all my life
How come?
, so when I hear Death Metal bands that are starting to use above said genres in their sound, I analyze it more thoroughly than most people would. Other than that, I like to bang my head and destroy like any other metalhead :)
Hah, see, we come from opposite backgrounds then.
I had no interest in music whatsoever until I discovered death metal, back then the earlier stuff but I usually stuck to the more progressive bands rather than Cannibal Corpse (their early shit was really total trash imo… At least they have a pretty good bass player… He just never gets to really show his talent except on side-projects like Blotted Science).

So yeah, back then was when the whole “jazz/death” and “tech/death” thing started, so that’s where my roots lie… Gotta say that I still think that there’s only so much you can do for variation in your music until it more or less accidentally becomes “jazz/classically -influenced”… Though I don’t deny the influences in general.

Guess who’s band is playing at NEDF this year!

Only saw this now, congrats!

Thanks man, hopefully we’ll get some decent footage, and see if you guys like my band.

We do play neoclassical/nujazz/oldschoolthrash/tehnical noisecore/random time sig/death metal  ← try inserting “meathead” as well. I think that may surprise people into buying more copies, particularly the goregrind fans :stuck_out_tongue:

Gotta see if I can find our album on Rapidshare or something :stuck_out_tongue_winking_eye: (no, I won’t get AIM or yahoo-messenger or whatever is “in” these days, I’m too old and too kvlt for that shit).

Oh shit - I clicked the link but didn’t make the connection. Which band is yours? That’s fucking awesome, man!
I like our ep but I’m very crictical about it, since I feel there’s barely more pro’s than con’s about it. Not to mention I was sick when recording so I sound like a dying smurf, because I sound like this when we play:

I don’t mind terrible fast wankery at all. But tons of bands play that fast (even though that may sound crazy to some), so yeah… There isn’t any other hint of technical prowess in their music though, which is actually a bit confusing. Surely they can do more, composition and polyrhythm-wise etc?

There’s an awesome music program from where I went to High School, I’m a bass player myself, and we had a great Jazz program, so I was always around a lot of Jazz people, and I happen to friends with a lot of the violinsts, dated a few actually, and I come from an Hispanic background, and there’s a few latin guitar players in the family.

I went the direction most people do when they find metal Sabbath->Metallica_>Maiden->Gothenburg MeloDeath->Opeth->Death->Disgorge->Everything else

Pro’s: Drums sound great, I actually like our playing style, the songs actually have structure, and we stay with the motifs.

Con’s: Vocals suck, guitar tone suck, solos suck, the bass needs to be better in the mix

I don’t sound like a smurf, I was sick for the weekend we were recording vocals, and we are on a budget so…we stuck with what we had for our EP, we’ll be in the studio to get it right at the end of year.

I personally am trying to get Malignancy’s style of vocals down, actually, I’ve been trying to do his predator vocals since those are insane.

“predator” vocals? What’s the predator part refer to ?

I’m downloading some mp3’s off their site as we “speak”.

As for me - I know none of them do anything special, but I’m really feeling Inherit Disease, Inveracity, and Disavowed right now. Thanks for turning me on to Disgorge, that’s been a band I’ve been meaning to get around and checking out, but finally did today and am loving 'em.
