Somehow, you are the last person I expected to be listening to any of the extreme-metal genres (no offense)

Really eh?
Why wouldn’t you expect it? I’m actually fairly into BM, though I used to be a lot more I still love it. Emperor is by far my favourite band of all time. I can’t get enough of em’

I dunno man, you just never gave off any ā€œsignalsā€ (in the posts of you which I read/remember), so to speak.

Emperor need to get back together and release a follow-up to Prometheus…

Ihsahn did with The Adversary and Angl

Everyone loves those bands. With the possible exception of Lordi.

Not everyone! I can dead with some of Metallica’s older stuff, but that’s about it.

No, death metal is arguably metal boiled down to its pure essentials. Hammering riffs, blasting drums and testosterone-soaked howls of rage. Some people can’t handle it, and for those people VH1 was invented.

I’m going to have to disagree to an extent with this. I think any good death metal worth listening to is actually quite varying, complex, and wildly creative. I’m NOT calling you musically un-trained here, but to the untrained ear, I can see how it’d sound like all of that - especially the drums (which I LOVE blasting drums!) Fact is, it’s one of the more intricate and complex genres of metal on generally. Pretty varied, too. That’s why metal is the king of all genres, no contest.

Just off the top of my head, think about The Berzerker vs. Voivod vs. At the Gates vs. Hate Eternal vs. Neuraxis. 5 bands a lot of people would consider ā€œdeath metal,ā€ 5 bands that are totally different.

Anywho - I was really glad when this thread was made. It’s good to see that there’s some who still see the darkness in all of the light (horrible, horrible joke.)[/quote]

Oh, I just noticed Lordi on that list, what I terrible band haha

I’m glad that this thread is still going.

Obscura - Anticosmic Overload

Revocation - Exhumed Identity

Psycroptic - Initiate

Immolation - Close to a World Below

Disgorge - Demise of the Trinity

Disgorge - Consume the Forsaken

Defeated Sanity -Psalms of the Moribund

Anyone read Lords of Chaos: The Bloody Rise of the Satanic Metal Underground? It’s a pretty awesome book. If you like reading about that kind of stuff.

Nah, there was a thread already for that. It had a good twenty posts on it.

Skaz, I saw you brought up Warbringer. I think I’m seeing a show with them, Goatwhore, and Krisiun coming up pretty soon. I could be mixing up that lineup, though - so many shows coming!

I’m feeling Disavowed a lot right now… kind of forgot they existed.

Also, just found Inveracity and Inherit Disease a week ago. Diggin’ both of them.

DEMONIUM MOTHER FUCKER!!
LMFAO

Good 20 posts. Damnit…
I’m gonna have to crawl back into my cave in the Nodric Wilderness. I’m grim like that.

I’m listening to Immortal - In My Kingdom Cold right now, just for you baby.

Dark Tranquility is great, as are most of the bands mentioned here so far. I will add Parkway Drive although I’m not sure you can call them ā€œDeathā€ Metal.

Hmmm. Do we have a a metal album review thread somewhere on here yet?

Guess we could make one, just out of pure boredom ya know

I don’t believe we do. Start it up CC.

I’ll wait until a few others chime in, cuz I don’t want to be the only idiot reviewing martyr and co on there

2 votes so far, let’s see if this idea can get some momentum going…

There are tons of review sites, of course, but some short reviews of our favs among meatheads…

Wonder if SSC, Detty and co will chime in.

Interesting idea. I like the idea of reviewing and comparing/contrasting albums with people I actually know. I go on a lot of review sites and read empty words from people who I don’t know at all.

I can say that I’m pretty much always listening to metal - which is good and bad. On my drives to school and work - on my walks to class - in the gym. It provides me with plenty of exposure, but lets me fall into a bit of complacency with my attentiveness.

It could definitely give me a reason to go through all my cd’s, listen to them again (and in a different light,) and explore a lot more content. Plus, I wouldn’t mind brushing up on my writing skills a little bit.

Also, I wouldn’t mind it if the thread was strictly death metal. I know CC and I were discussing certain bands that go a bit into the math-metal area, and even with some jazz-fusion incorporated. Now I’m not saying we should ā€˜allow’ shit like Marylin Manson…

Godsmack, hell, even things like August Burns Red and a lot of the metalcore shit, but things that transcend the genre a bit. I would, of course, want the brunt of the reviews to be centered around death metal and its closest relatives - but that’s just me.

My only problem is that I may take a while to really get the ball rolling… I’d like to really take the time to sit down and carefully listen to everything and give it a true, honest synopsis. Other than that - I’m down.

I’ll pretty much start cracking through my discology and putting some shit down tomorrow… I actually shouldn’t even be online right now - Huge exam tomorrow.

Well, I’m down for an metal review thread. I got a shit ton of albums I can write up about.

Somebody start er’!

Good luck in your exam!

Hey, just write down a review or two and pm me, we can exchange some ideas and then start the thread once we have a fair few reviews together (that goes for the other guys in here as well, feel free to join in!)

As for what the thread should be about… Hmm.
I was thinking extreme metal only at first, but then there are a lot of good bands in the regular metal genres as well…

A tech-thread maybe? That could include all the jazzy stuff as well…

Imo, let’s just make it a metal review thread in general… If someone wants to post a marylin manson review, well, you can’t really include godsmack and then say ā€œmm isn’t trve kvlt black metal, so it doesn’t go in hereā€ or some such  Let’s just be a tad more tolerant than usual.
I’ll even review some manson albums and maybe the latest slipknot as well, I think.
Those are easier to review than Martyr and co imo since you don’t have to listen to the album 300 times to get all the nuances, polyrhythms, barely-audible ghost notes and what-have-you…

As long as people’s reviews make sense/are fair (just cause you don’t like the genre isn’t a good reason to call the music crap. and adress some points (i.e. just saying ā€œcool albumā€ in 20 different ways and calling that a review, adress the riffs, comparisons, tech, production (what’s muddy what’s clear, instruments too low or too high in the mix… as listened to over pc as well as hi-fi if available, if you want to go into detail)
etc.

Of course, when reviewing music you normally don’t listen to (say, me reviewing slipknot) you need some points of reference. Instead of saying ā€œI hate thisā€, I’d review their tech, production, etcetc but also stuff like their refrains (which aren’t all that important in most tech-metal genres, but obviously pretty much the key-element in most popular/chart music) and maybe the lyrics or so…

Whatever you can think of and want to include.

Hmm. Am I glad that I don’t over-analyze shit this badly when it comes to bodybuilding.

Write some reviews, pm me a few… Let’s get a decent amount together first ,or else everyone will be afraid of posting :stuck_out_tongue_winking_eye:
