Hmmm. Do we have a a metal album review thread somewhere on here yet?
Guess we could make one, just out of pure boredom ya know
I donāt believe we do. Start it up CC.
Iāll wait until a few others chime in, cuz I donāt want to be the only idiot reviewing martyr and co on there
2 votes so far, letās see if this idea can get some momentum goingā¦
There are tons of review sites, of course, but some short reviews of our favs among meatheadsā¦
Wonder if SSC, Detty and co will chime in.
Interesting idea. I like the idea of reviewing and comparing/contrasting albums with people I actually know. I go on a lot of review sites and read empty words from people who I donāt know at all.
I can say that Iām pretty much always listening to metal - which is good and bad. On my drives to school and work - on my walks to class - in the gym. It provides me with plenty of exposure, but lets me fall into a bit of complacency with my attentiveness.
It could definitely give me a reason to go through all my cdās, listen to them again (and in a different light,) and explore a lot more content. Plus, I wouldnāt mind brushing up on my writing skills a little bit.
Also, I wouldnāt mind it if the thread was strictly death metal. I know CC and I were discussing certain bands that go a bit into the math-metal area, and even with some jazz-fusion incorporated. Now Iām not saying we should āallowā shit like Marylin Mansonā¦
Godsmack, hell, even things like August Burns Red and a lot of the metalcore shit, but things that transcend the genre a bit. I would, of course, want the brunt of the reviews to be centered around death metal and its closest relatives - but thatās just me.
My only problem is that I may take a while to really get the ball rolling⦠Iād like to really take the time to sit down and carefully listen to everything and give it a true, honest synopsis. Other than that - Iām down.
Iāll pretty much start cracking through my discology and putting some shit down tomorrow⦠I actually shouldnāt even be online right now - Huge exam tomorrow.[/quote]
Good luck in your exam!
Hey, just write down a review or two and pm me, we can exchange some ideas and then start the thread once we have a fair few reviews together (that goes for the other guys in here as well, feel free to join in!)
As for what the thread should be about⦠Hmm.
I was thinking extreme metal only at first, but then there are a lot of good bands in the regular metal genres as wellā¦
A tech-thread maybe? That could include all the jazzy stuff as wellā¦
Imo, letās just make it a metal review thread in general⦠If someone wants to post a marylin manson review, well, you canāt really include godsmack and then say āmm isnāt trve kvlt black metal, so it doesnāt go in hereā or some such
Letās just be a tad more tolerant than usual.
Iāll even review some manson albums and maybe the latest slipknot as well, I think.
Those are easier to review than Martyr and co imo since you donāt have to listen to the album 300 times to get all the nuances, polyrhythms, barely-audible ghost notes and what-have-youā¦
As long as peopleās reviews make sense/are fair (just cause you donāt like the genre isnāt a good reason to call the music crap. and adress some points (i.e. just saying ācool albumā in 20 different ways and calling that a review, adress the riffs, comparisons, tech, production (whatās muddy whatās clear, instruments too low or too high in the mix⦠as listened to over pc as well as hi-fi if available, if you want to go into detail)
etc.
Of course, when reviewing music you normally donāt listen to (say, me reviewing slipknot) you need some points of reference. Instead of saying āI hate thisā, Iād review their tech, production, etcetc but also stuff like their refrains (which arenāt all that important in most tech-metal genres, but obviously pretty much the key-element in most popular/chart music) and maybe the lyrics or soā¦
Whatever you can think of and want to include.
Hmm. Am I glad that I donāt over-analyze shit this badly when it comes to bodybuilding.
