I am 14 years old, 125 pounds, and 5 foot 5. I am trying to get bigger and stronger for basketball over the summer. I almost have my riutine figured out.
I just need to know.
Should I do deadlifts and squats on the same day? I heard that one should not do deadlifts and squats on the same day. Is this true? Will I see beter gains from doing them on seperate days?
I like to do squats and straight leg deadlifts together when I am doing high volume (10x10x2) for muscle growth and endurance. However I schedule them as far apart as possible when I go heavy for strength increases. Another option is to do heavy squats with light deadlifts on one day, and then switch the on next leg day. Try some of the routines on this site and then listen to you body. Your lower back will let you know if you’re overdoing it.
BTW, congratulations on choosing to do these lifts in the first place. Compound lifts should be the cornerstone of your routines whether you’re a beginner or an elite lifter. Good Luck on the court!
I agree with Nate Dogg on this one, just find a workout somewhere on this site and follow it as written. I personally would be reduced to a quivering mass on the floor if I pushed myself in both the squat and deadlift on the same day.
i run hoop too, though my serious playing days are behind me. but in response to your question, the last time i did squats & deads on the same day with heavy weights (5 x 5), i ate a ton of food afterwards, slept a full eight hours, and still woke up feeling tired and feverish. unless you’ve been training for awhile and your CNS is well-adjusted, i would separate those lifts for sure. good luck…
Pick a routine and then do it. Don’t worry too much about stuff like that. I used to say never do squats and deads in the same workout but I did so in my last cycle.
I don’t think you should squat and do off-the-floor deadlifts on the same day. Both are VERY demanding on your nervous system, especially the deadlifts. If you put a lot of effort into whichever you do first, your back and/or legs aren’t going to have enough juice for the next lift.
If what you’re worried about is having a quad dominant movement and a hamstring dominant movement on the same day, that’s perfectly doable - I’d use a variation on the deadlift though, such as Romanian Deadlifts or Keystone Deadlifts, and do them after squats.
Be VERY careful about your sprint and plyo volume. They can take more out of you than you realize. Use your gym lifts as a gauge - if they stagnate or you feel weaker as you go on, cut back on the volume overall, but especially the plyos and sprints.

I would do the sprints and plyos on different days then I do squats and deadlifts.
I think you’ll find that your recovery is better doing a little bit often than doing alot all at once.
FYI-Lifting, sprints and plyos are alot of work to be doing and you may be sore for the first few weeks, but I would assume it’ll dissipate after a few weeks of accomodating to the new training load.
