Deadlifts and Goodmornings

Rippetoe’s Starting Strength says to do Good-Mornings with 35% of your Max Squat for 8-10 reps. He also says that if 35% of your Max Squat is 95lbs or less, there’s no reason to do Good-Mornings. While Some people may disagree with the whole 35% thing, I don’t think anyone would disagree with the fact that you should not be doing Good-Mornings with anything less than 135 and that 135 should be pretty easy.

If the bar doesn’t pass your toes, it’s not a good morning. It’s just a really bad squat.

You should do your Good Mornings with form that mimics your deadlift. If you Deadlift Sumo, most of your Good-Mornings will be done with a squat stance. If you Deadlift conventional, most of your Good-Mornings will be done with the stance that you do Deadlifts and Cleans from. [/quote]

I dunno, 135 feels really easy, but my squat is only about twice that. I guess I’m still not activating my glutes when I squat.

Keep in Mind that at Westside guys with 700lb deadlifts are doing GMs with 500 pounds.

Good insights. I do conventional, and that’s how I do my GMs. Next time, I’ll try looking at the mirror to see whether I’m squatting real bad or doing legit GMs.

yeah, look at Ano or Jani’s log in EliteFTS.com, they do huge GMs(600-800), but they barely move. Some with the huge GMs are doing around 45 degree bend, so obviously they wouldnt do as much as if they were bending all the way at the hip.
