Every time I deadlift, once I get up past 290 lbs., I can never get my first pull up more than a couple of inches. However, after that first one I have no trouble banging out the rest of my reps. The thing that I can’t figure though, is that I always take a 4 to 5 second pause in between reps so that I am not cheating by using the bounce to start the next rep, and I have no trouble continuing the set.I just can’t seem to get that first one up. The second thing is, sometimes after doing a set I’ll get a numbness in my fingertips that will last anywhere from a few minutes to a day or two.Are either of these things any of the rest of you have experienced or could there be something wrong with my technique that maybe I’m just not seeing?
sounds like a lack of mental focus. you may need to fail before you get jacked up enough to pull. learn to get jacked on the first rep too. www.michiganpowerlifters.com
I tend to agree with you, because after that one, the rest are fine. The thing is I really like deads and I’m usually amped just doing them, so I don’t feel like I lack focus. The mind can be a terrible thing.
You might try deadlifting while standing on two plates (one for each foot)which may help your pull from the floor. Make sure you squeeze your glutes and your sphincter muscle(a.k.a asshole), as well as tighten your abs, just before the pull from the floor. If you haven’t read Dave Tate’s most recent T-Mag article on deadlifting, you should. Can’t offer any suggestions on the lack of feeling in your hands. You must be pinching a nerve. Make sure you’re using a thick layer of chalk on your hands.
