Deadlift Question

It seems like the full body workout is the current rage.

Likewise, I have been on a full body program. I am getting ready to step up the intensity, and I am going to use a split program.

Here is the question. No flames please, just some solid advice. Deadlifts on leg day or back day?

Thanks guys.

Do the deads on leg day you have more recovery time between sessions.

I prefer to do deads on different days than squats. Both lifts are very taxing and I like to give each one maximum effort.

I like to super-set my squats and deads together.

I would say separate leg day between hip dominant exercise such as the deadlift and quad dominant execise such as the squat (high bar, oly style preferably).

By back day, do you mean you do upper and lower back? I’d say do stiff legged dls, but it still hits your glutes and hams. I’ve always considered them a leg exercise.

Exactly both lifts are taxing and by splitting them up you tax your recovery ability. You would be doing a heavy squat or dead every 3-4 days and eventually it will lead to burn out.
But by doing both lifts in the same session you give yourself more rest between sessions.

i do a modified west side training and for max effort I alternate between squats and deadlifts. so one week i’ll squat and the next week I’ll deadlift. works the best for me. i know a few people who can do both in the same week on different days, but its tough to recover. I also know some who do both on the same day.

I split squats and DL into two separate days with three days between.

Either can work. Two leg days one hip dominant one quad dominant. Squats/deads.

Or both one day. Just switch which goes first from time to time. Whichever is your weaker link.

Either can work though. Try one and try the other and find what works for YOU.

Just my take, no expert just,

I peronally never Deadlift on Squat day. I think they take something away from each other, but everyone is different.

I always have a great deadlift workout when I do it on back day.

I like to do deadlifts on leg days, and on back days I do half deads…

I agree w/ snoop and to add to this point…i seperate quads and hamstrings doing deadlifts on my hamstring days.

It isn’t a bad idea to do back and hams on the same day. Thus solving your original question.

I always get a much BETTER deadlift workout after I’ve tightened up my um core um with squats. How many day split? 2, 3, 4 or more? Squats followed by deads and abs and or traps, and possibly even biceps together. Then an upper body pressing and an upper body only row/chin day.

Also depends on style. Squat wide, deadlift close works well.

Jeez - I was joking. Whatever happned to sarcasm?

If I were to mix the squats and deadlifts on the same day, I would spend more time ralphing in a trashcan than lifting. Just thinking about super-setting them is making me queazy.

I thought you were serious too.

I like to superset squats with sumo DL sometimes.

TBT had me doing antagonist sets with those, 18 reps apiece. And yes, it is a definite recipe for vomit if you keep the intensity up.

I’m with bigmike…

I do Squats and Deads on separate days, separated by two days AND I do each prior to rest days. So…

Squats (Leg Day) is on Tuesday (I rest Wendsday)

Deads (On Back Day) are on Friday (I rest on Saturday and Sunday).

It’s an “'ole School” split, by the way…I haven’t “caught the fever” of the Full Body Workouts!

It’s really, really depressing when you think your being witty, and NOBODY gets the joke. Now I know how my h.s. chemistry teacher must have felt when we would just stare at him like he was from Mars. But I digress…

I can see Sumo DL’s and squats, as I think Sumo’s are more of a quad exercise than a back exercise, but I don’r know about supersetting two exercises that target the same muscle group.

Romanian DL’s, on the other hand, would superset well with squats since they make my hammies burn real bad. But I would only do that if you live on the bottom floor, people are used to seeing you cry for no apparent reason, and you wear loafers of some sort that don’t require much effort to put them on.

TBT is nothing more than CW getting his jollies by torturing his poor victims. Never mind that it works - and works well - he still enjoys watching the torture.

Have you tried QD yet? 2X25, pal.

THis is probably just repeating others here but I myself squat and dead on different days. However not everybody’s the same so if you can handle those huge exercises together then go nuts.
Also agree with rainjack with sumo’s and squats both hitting quads so as to superset may be a little draining…but then again everbody’s different.

FWIW, I figured you were being sarcastic. But like other’s have said, supersetting DL and squat variations is okay. For instance, regular DLs and front squats work okay (my FSQ is way less than my squat) or regular back squat and Romanian DL works, or squat and power clean - you get the idea. Still very tiring, but nothing like the evil that would be regular DLs and back squats - that’s just its own level of Hell right there.

I think the best response I’ve heard to the question of where do deadlifts fit in was the following: “I do deadlifts on deadlift day.”
