Deadlift Problem: Losing My Grip

when I hook grip, its both hands.

Only an observation, but I rarely see lifters dropping weights from a lost grip at the meets. Maybe 1 or 2 good solid drops from the top in the entire meet, male and female both. That’s in 13 years of competing.

Realize you may get to use a good DL bar which has deep knurls, possibly smaller in diameter, its covered in chalk, and hopefully clean. What I mean by clean is that there’s no hair gels, body lotions, foot creams, and whatever assorted garbage all over the bar, like at a commercial gym.

If your training bars are dirty, take a wire brush in with you and scrub the bar before your sets. After scrubbing, (our gym has spray pump bottles of 409 cleaner all over the place for the cardio machines) take a towel and wipe the bar down with the cleaner. Then put some chalk on the bar.

Our crappy old gym bars are as good as new after we uncovered the knurling that had been hiding under the grime for the last 10 years.

good luck at the meet.

One last thing:

Try using the opposite (alternate) grip on your warmups, up to a moderately heavy weight. Then switch to the grip you are strongest. This really helped with some upper back issues I had. It also gives you nice even scars on both shins.

I had a similiar problem, i worked on my grip with my Captains of Crush grippers and that seemed to help. If you dont have them maybe heavy dumbell holds or more thick bar work or something.

Reducing calluses will help with tearing.

You can buy a pumice stone at wal-mart, or you can just cut them down with razor blades.
