Thats sort of embarassing.
Get some chalk.
Put the gloves back in your purse. [/quote]
Not because of the amount of weight. I can lift a deuce and a half… just WITH gloves

Ronnie Coleman deadlifts ~ 800 pounds with gloves.

I really only get scraped when I pull with a snatch grip. It used to happen with conventional but now that my hip mobility is better I usually avoid that. Never with sumo and that’s what I go with for heavy deadlifting.
Personally I’ve taken to biting my callouses to keep them in check. They never bother me when I’m lifting.

I’ve never met a girl that minded. Most of them say they like it.
I always felt my hands got more calloused from chins, simply because of the length of time spent hanging over so many reps and sets. Sure DLs aren’t exactly comfortable for your hands, but if you have a tighter grip, and the bar isn’t just sort of ‘hanging’ at the end of your hand, maybe you won’t have the skin bunch up so much (callous)

I can deadlift 230kg (506lbs) with a hook grip. No chalk either.
Hurts like a bastard.
I am a carpenter though, so my grip is pretty good and my hards are tough.
My only injuries from deadlifting are two cracked ribs. Still don’t know how I did that though. Belt too tight or something. I don’t use one anymore for deads.

I deadlift with a cape.
One of the problems is how deep/sharp the knurling is.
I purposefully find the bar with minimal knurling as I have found that sharp knurling hurts like hell if there is over 150kg on the bar.
Maybe this is why the OP wears gloves - to take the edge off the knurling.
should I mention knurling again…

haha, well my wife did say EWWW to my callouses, so I use gloves all the time!
and i put on soccer pads under my sweatpants to DL.

Between lifting, bartending(opening beer bottles) and playing guitar, I really don’t think I could hurt my hands if i wanted to.

For me, lifting and rock climbing have given me some pretty rough hands. I’m a massage therapist so you’d think I’d wear gloves, but I’ve never had a client complain in 3 years.
Any ‘man’ that ‘needs’ to wear gloves to keep his hands soft is definitely a pussy.
I’ve never really gotten the whole deal with gloves/chalk. I have no problems holding on to the bar repping 315, but I never get the crazy callouses that people seem to talk about. My hands don’t seem particularly ‘hard’ to me either. I do think I could probably use chalk for heavy singles/doubles though. I’ve talked to people who have seen instant poundage or rep increases when they start using chalk going heavy.
I don’t use gloves or chalk. I used to rip my calluses off all the time(while lifting) now they are fine, and I don’t have a problem. I have gotten used to it.

I agree.
wearing gloves is akin too putting a pad on the barbel for squats, if you bleed once a month your allowed too use either otherwise man the fuck up.

I fuckin lol’d hard!
I never use gloves for deadlifts and my hands still give me some trouble but isn’t so bad as long as I stay away from doing anything else. Back day is usually deads and shrugs with some other small isolation stuff so I have do rows and pull ups after my hands heal up a bit.
Just because you use gloves doesn’t make you less manly.
If you can lift more weight with gloves…then use the gloves.
you will be more ‘hardcore’ lifting heavier weight than lifting lighter with bleeding hands.
And my hands are calloused from gloves/chalk/no gloves…just training. I also have scrapes on my shins from deads. Looks like I cut myself shaving. lol My wrists always have bruises and small cuts on them as well because of my straps.
250 with or without gloves for reps is like a warm up. Set a new goal for yourself ;D lol

I got a little story from yesterday.
A couple of weeks my back for some reason gave out on me when pulling 240x5 so I decided to just deload for a couple of weeks. I came back a couple of weeks later and started off at a low 135 just to warm up. There is no doubt that dropping my ass low and keeping my back straight was more comfortable so I used that position while working through my sets. As I’m pulling I realize that my shins were getting some rough treatment from pulling 235 but I’m feeling strong. When I finally reach my last set of 285x5 I pull my pant leg up to reveal a red ass shin. The kid who was doing some benches just looked at it like “damn sucks to be you!”.
Well that’s my story…
Deadlift scrapes used to tattoo my legs, but in the past 4 months i no longer scrape them, so nothing to show now…
On the other hand, i got my back bruised pretty bad from squatting in a beater the other day, that shit hurts bad because i have some scabs…
