Is it counterproductive to do both of these drills on the same day? It seems like I would be overtraining the muscle groups. I understand that both exercises work slightly different parts, but it seems like they’re too similar to effectively be synergistic.
Any thoughts on this? Our S&C coach has us doing them on the same day. I was thinking about doing Good Mornings instead of RDL’s, and doing the RDL’s with my front squats.
Sure can be done and would be a hell of a stimulus on the low back hams glutes etc. Expect the second move to suffer.
Same cold be said for the GM’s they will suffer after a DL session as well. Just be sure to recover after ward. a LOT Personally I prefer to do a Main move like say a DL then follow it with a second ME move thats more quad dominant say a front squat or leg press. Of Opposite do a back squat and follow that with a Form Of DL etc. still a LOT of carry over but not as direct
In the end yes itll work, no it wont, FOR SOME experiment find out how you react
I would say, trust your S&C coach, he should know what he is doing.
When I was doing PL, I would do SLDL for a heavy triple after Pulling heavy singles of 90% on the deadlift and some form of quad work (aka front squats, oly squat, lunges, split squats).
Yeah I would say no reason you can’t do RDLs as an assistance after going heavy on conventional deads. I prefer good mornings but they are pretty similar in terms of muscles worked. I guess just understand that you won’t quite be as strong in your RDLs after pulling heavy.
I just tried the deadlifts and RDLs on the same day today.
My legs and back held up fine, it was my grip that suffered. By the last set of RDLs I couldn’t even hold the bar, and I’ve been using straps for all my sets (I had elbow surgery, and my grip is much weaker, just because my arm was sliced and diced up).
I like the idea of it, but until my grip gets stronger I’ll probably just do Good Mornings instead of RDLs.
How about if you wore a belt during conventional deads? What reps are you doing. I think rack pulls and RDLs together make more sense. my spine takes less of a beating when I do that.
bad advice above about wearing a belt. Your spine would take less of a beating if you did 1-leg RDLs. I’d love to hear why anyone loves GMs, just seeing other people do them hurts my lower back.
