A physical therapy MD recently discribed our disks as jelly doughnuts. Her words were “how much do you want to crush a jelly doughnut in your back at the price of permanent pain & injury”. I do good mornings, chins and very light high rep deadlifts and rowing. I also use a lot of DMSO for pain relief in the back.[/quote]
Excuse me, but how would the “jelly doughnut” get crushed by deadlifts, as they’re a Pulling movement, if anything, wouldn’t they instead “loosen” them?
curious
From what I understand, If you perform the deadlift incorectly and round at the lumbar spine (vertebral flexion), you expand the back of the disc and pinch the front of it, forcing the internal disc material to the posterior of the disc which puts lots of pressure on the annulus (ring of fibers holding the nucleus of the disc in place), by consistently using a faulty movement pattern such as this, your putting yourself at an extreme risk of disc herniation and of tearing the posterior ligament which connects the vertabrae to each other.
I’m assuming the PT is refering to the nucleus material as the “jelly” inside of the disc or “doughnut” and the herniation mechanism refering to the “jelly” coming out of the “doughnut”. I’m guessing thats what she meant when she said “crushing”, although I don’t know if thats the best way of describing that process…
