Dave Barr's Low-Carb Diet

Hey guys,

I am interested in following Dave Barr’s “Carbohydrate Tolerance: Frontline for Fatlass” diet. It essentially involves eating extremely low amounts of carbs.

On Day 1, I’m supposed to only eat between 10 and 20 grams. On days 2-5, I’m just supposed to eat between 20-40 grams.

What exactly would I eat that would have such low amounts of carbs? I’ve never dieted this carefully before and so I could use some recipe advice. What would you guys eat that would fill these carb requirements?

Thanks.

Meats and greeen veggies

What Phill said, and I suggest you get a FitDay.com membership (free). I’m using it for the same diet and what I like about FitDay’s food input/log section is that when it shows you the total carbs it also shows the amount of fiber consumed.

You subtracts the fiber from the total carbs consumed. Fiber isn’t digested or processed by the body so it doesn’t count towards the carb requirements. And it makes you feel full, which helps for ANY diet really.

Go to Forums—>Article Discussions—>Frontline Fat Loss if you haven’t already.

In the article discussion, Dave Barr states that veggies don’t count for carbs, so you don’t have to count them in your carb total. I’m guessing sweet potato or a small amount of oatmeal would be ok.

Those are not veggies. Spinach, cucumbers, broccoli, and radishes are vegetables.

That is what he said in the article discussion.

Vegetable carbs don’t count, but then again, vegetables like corn and potatoes don’t count as vegetables. (thanks to Mike Roussell for that one).

You have to watch yourself, and not to be a fanatic, but soluble fiber is partially utilized by the body, and so only half of it's value should be subtracted from your CHO count.
Other foods to eat, hard cheeses, healthy oils/fats..
eggs, most have .6 to 1gm CHO per egg. I use egglands best right now as they have Omega3 and zero carb/egg.

Anyway this is very akin to the anabolic diet, which is what I'm on, and you can get lots of info on the big thread on it..

There are lots of "copycat" diets, all based in difft ways on Mauro DiPasquales diet, which IMO is the best.
You get tremendous results from it like increased growth hormone output working in tandem w/inulin spiking on weekends, and test is up as well from increased saturated fats.

Hope this gives a couple good pointers your way.

      good luck, ToneBone

You know, when I think of “vegetables”, only a few specific types come to mind. I need to specify what I’m referring to in Barrticles so people don’t run around eating potatoes.

The above are in line with my thinking. Green = good (except mold).

I would go as low as possible on day 1. Ideally, no actual “carb sources” would be used. Even lactose free cottage cheese (for example) is not out of the question.

It’s basically a protein/green vegetables day.

On day 1, oatmeal and potatoes (of any kind) are a bad idea. They can be used as the carb source (in small quantities) on subsequent days.

I’m glad you brought this up. Dr. D. is the pioneer of this field, and low carb diets wouldn’t be as popular for most of us if it weren’t for him. I try to give him credit for this as much as possible, and have no problem stating that I have based my diets on much of his work (standing on the shoulders of giants).

Having said that, I feel that there is always a lot of room for improvement/optimization. That’s what I’m all about.

I gotcha, thanks for the clarification Brant_Drake. I now realize I sounded like a tool, should have read more carefully.

I gotcha, thanks for clearing that up DB.

Good points, and you have got the brains to back up said improvements, I like what I see from your perspective Dave..
I'll have to take a closer look at your threads on this.

Didn't mean anything by my comment, just informing some folks that's all...

Keep up the great job helping everyone Dave, good stuff..

Hi there, Had two quick questions? Are grains okay to eat during the 1st 5days of the plan, i.e(beans, lentils) if so, how many grams? How about net impact carbs? I was reading through some labels on protein bars and most of them make a reference to this? And last, absolutely no carbs after 5pm, right?
