Danny John/Cressey/Robertson

I posted this earlier but I don’t see it anywhere. (Mods, if it’s still being vetted, delete where appropriate).

I’ve started doing cleans. Any tips for how I avoid smashing my collarbone with the bar? I don’t seem to have that “catch” although it’s early days yet.

I’m front squatting.

Thanks.

Well, this will sound odd, but the bar might be too light. As I ‘read’ your issue, the bar is crashing on you. Now, you need to really learn the timing of the lift, but often athletes will pull the bar up to eye level then jump under the bar and let it fall five feet onto the rack…that hurts.

A couple of my little resources might help:

I had a nice pad of callouses, smashed zits and chalk on my collar bone for a long time when I first learned to clean. Then, I started improving my timing and snapping into the Front Squat position and never had another problem.

Thanks! That’s basically what I’m doing. I’ll try adding weight and see what happens.

Try to think of it as moving your body around the Barr instead of the other way around. That way you’ll natually drop under as you catch, prolonging the duration of the initial impact on your collar bone (thereby reducing the force per unit time).

BTW-Danny John is a stud.

Cheers

“the Barr” Dave, seriously…
