Calves are the only bodypart that are completely pointless to train if your a powerlifter. They have no purpose in any of the big three. You can work biceps just fine by hitting them indirectly with rows and backwork. Kroc rows anyone?

When your elbows and shoulders hurt so fucking much that you can’t bench, do rows, chins or even deadlifts without pain, then it’s a different story. I’ve been there and its not fun.
If you don’t need to do curls, then don’t do them. If you are dealing with shoulder and elbow injuries and aren’t curling because you saw Ed Coan say somewhere that he doesn’t do them, then you’re stupid.
Have a doctor anaesthetise your biceps then try and knock out a PR in ANY of the three power lifts. Then end this thread.
As I understand it, working biceps at full range of motion will go some way to preventing bicep tears when deadlifting (assuming form is acceptable). Working partial ROM will increase your risk.
Calf injuries are not unheard of when attempting big squats. They are recruited in all three power lifts.

Cool your jets man, no need to feel threatened in your own thread!
If your so tired of people saying you have small arms, why not train them and make them bigger? Girls like it, and they definitely come in handy in real life (carrying heavy stuff, manual labor, etc.) Hell, I use my biceps every day.
The anti bicep movement on the boards is getting just as out of hand as the gym guys who believe in nothing but biceps and bench. This is getting ridiculous. If you don’t wanna do bicep work, don’t do it. I didn’t use to do any. Last time I went to do some tire flipping I got bad bicep tendonitis though, and it felt like my back work was stalling as well. Throwing in a few sets of curls at the end of every other workout pretty much eliminated this problem.
There are no useless muscles in the body. Anyone who argue otherwise probably doesn’t deserve the right to argue. There are muscles that are less important to powerlifting than other muscles, but completely neglecting biceps over some belief they are simply cosmetic is misguided. Especially when they take so little effort.
Gaining 3lbs in bicep mass? That would be pretty substantial. Probably would take a lot of specific bicep training to accomplish something like that.
Anyone have a physical job, or do anything physical in life other than powerlift? See how useless biceps are then.
Hmmm… Not training your biceps cos you’re too hardcore. Real smart. May as well spend the extra time nailing your tri’s with boards presses and pushdowns so, since that’s where the power comes from.
Make sure anyone who tries that lets us know how they’re getting on 2 years down the road.
It’s funny how the only place to have a muscular imbalance in your body is in your arms.
I always wonder what the problem with arms training is all about. Is is so unmanly? I mean, it’s nice to pump some blood into your balls with squat & deadlift, but - if you decide to spend some time on your arms, you’re supposed to be a pussy?
Just look at some of the blue-collar guys. My dad used to work in a foundry and had those huge arms, which I still consider the essence of manliness. And he kicked some guys asses even if he has never done a single squat. Your body strength must be transferred to the weight you lift. How? Through your arms.
Brauny, your body looks very solid and you have excellent strength. Just add those curls & dips - you’ll rarely get physically overshadowed in your life then, which is very nice when you’re round some girls ![]()
look im not trying to be arrogant and in all actiuality, ive realized that my arms are abnormally small for my body. i just dont get why people gotta be so dang harsh on something so small. i made this thread because i wanted to see if anyone felt the way i did, but i guess some people are keyboard strength coaches…
o and btw, i know my spelling is horrendous ![]()
but i am starting a tri bi day for the week in my workouts, i got sick tri strength for wrestling, but im gonna need some work on my bi’s
thanks for the tips people ![]()

I never said that I didn’t do curls. I was just providing an option for the people who hate to curl and want to train their biceps.

I think you’re responding to my post. I don’t think I ever said that biceps were unimportant in the three power lifts. However, I do feel it’s slightly ridiculous to isolate your calves when your intent is to squat, bench press and deadlift in competition. I think the only time I’ve used my calves while squatting is when I dorsiflex during the motion. I really don’t feel that calves are used in the bench press, even with the concept of leg drive. If you use your calves while deadlifting, you are hitching.
So from what I gather people are making fun of you because your arms are small. What do you care, since you’ve made it so abundantly clear you don’t lift for looks or general athleticism but rather your specific sport?

begin rant I AM SICK OF PEOPLE COMMENTING ON MY ARMS AND SAYING I NEED TO DO MORE BICEPTS! BICEPTS ARE NOT A THING IN MY WORKOUT ROUTINE ALL THE DAMN TIME I DINT CARE HOW BIG THEY GET. I AM WORRIED ABOUT BREAKING RECORDS IN POWERLIFTING AND BEING ABLE TO SQUAT 1000. I DONT ASK HOW MUCH YOU BECNCH, I ASK HOW MUCH YOU SQUAT! I DONT CARE THAT YOU GOT 20 INCH ARMS, I MAY NEVER CUZ I WILL NEVER CARE ENOUGH!!! end rant
does anyone out there feel the same!?[/quote]
Seriously, your bicepts are lagging badly… I can’t even see them!

Considering Kroc has an arm DAY in his training, I wouldn’t really concern myself too much with his rows used for bicep development.

generally people who row alot of weight have big biceps.

Well, I used Kroc as an example, but I’m pretty sure you can still have well developed arms from rows and backwork.

It’s true, I’m just saying that Kroc isn’t really the posterboy for using only rows.
