Only a few people at wrestling tonight, so nothing too structured or difficult. Me and the only other experienced guy there (multi-time state qualifier out of New England) showed off some basics for our new guys. We got talked into briefly going live, and after some real physical handfighting I got the takedown and stuck him. Which I was honestly surprised at, because this is the scariest-looking dude on the team. 20” neck at 170, which looks downright freaky (and I was proud about hitting 18, lol). Neutral offense remains a weak point, but we take what we can get.
Didn’t feel too great coming into this, so I just did an easy five for the top set. Sure enough, I pulled something in my back during the supplemental work and called it there (still did accessories). It doesn’t seem like it’ll be bad enough to get in the way of wrestling tomorrow, so I don’t anticipate any need to work around it going forwards.
Just finished getting back grades from the first round of testing, and here’s what we’re looking at:
Art History: 97% (Don’t know Average)
H. Bio: 94% (Average 82%)
H. Chem: 88% (Average 86%)
H. Calc I: 107% (Don’t Know Average)
H. Chem Lab: 99% (Don’t Know Average)
Pretty happy with everything but chem. I’m not worried about it going forwards though, since the first unit had very little actual chemistry in it - mostly minutiae like quantum mechanics. Now that we’re into actual chemistry the class gets substantially easier for me.
I’m trying to get a job doing glorified janitorial work in our biogeochemical lab. Not very exciting, but the name of the game at this point is just getting in the building and making connections.
A whopping attendance of three for tonight’s practice, and nobody within like 70 Lbs of one another. Some dude from the boxing practice in the next room dropped in, (actually was curious about joining, had competed in high school) and I got in a single live go before just deciding to call it a night and go condition (tossed the dude from over/underhooks after he tried the same).
DOMS from the split squats waited until last night to really kick in, and my left adductor feels like it’s going to rip off of my leg. All the walking loosened it up nicely, but I don’t have high hopes for pulling tomorrow.
Finally found a scale here. Actually pretty happy with this number - I’ve kept all the weight that I managed to put on during BBBB and BtM, and rep PR’s are still coming in smoothly. The most likely weight classes for me second semester are 174 and 165. We’ll see what happens.
Honestly, I don’t think the cut would be difficult at all. I’m eating past satiety at pretty much every meal I have, so I’d probably just have to stop doing that and up my protein somewhat.
All the deadlifts moved easy, and the PR’s solid. Watching back over the video, there’s a long gap between the last three reps when I start pulling dead-stop, but I don’t really mind because it gives me more practice pulling the “first” rep, and the set was still hard as fuck. 405 had minimal grind, and then the next thing I know I’m getting up off the floor and asking the dude in the next rack if I locked the rep before I went down. Ended up with a cut right next to my right eye, but nothing besides that.
And I got the rep.
I was thinking I’d just add some more salt to my food and throw a banana in with my lunch. Now that I think of it, the food here seems to be pretty light on salt, so maybe that’s my issue right there.
@T3hPwnisher , I seem to remember you having a similar issue with pressing overhead. Did you do anything in particular to address it? I’d rather avoid concussing myself.
@throwawayfitness I appreciate the concern dude. Definitely don’t want to hurt myself being an idiot.
@T3hPwnisher I have free Powerade on tap at like four places within a couple blocks of my dorm, so that’s definitely a workable solution. Always appreciate your input dude.
Top set was mostly a PR by virtue of me never having had a plus set at that weight, and felt pretty slow. Everything afterwards was great, though - rows in particular. I’m not far from being able to knock out some big sets with the 120’s, which are the biggest dumbbells here.
Thanks dude! It’s hard to notice changes day-to-day, but you just got me to look back over the first couple videos I put up and you’re definitely right.
To make the change seem ever more dramatic, this is from a couple years (and like 65 pounds) ago:
Squat: 5x135/185/225/260/290 (Match PR)
Max ROM Sled Leg Press: 315x10/10/10, Singles to 545x1
Chins: 5x3 @ +47.5
RP Leg Extensions: 160x17+9+5
Top set felt heavy today and moved slow. I’m looking forwards to the Deload next week, which is usually a good sign that I’m putting in some solid work.
First time ever using a leg press, so after everything else was done I had some fun with it and loaded up a bunch of plates. For the sake of easy numbers, I’m just assuming that the unloaded sled is 45 Lbs.
1xComplex @ 135: Power Clean, Hang Clean, 2xClean-Grip High Pull
Wrestling meeting tonight was purely informational, so I got in some work afterwards. Not too difficult from a conditioning standpoint, but my upper back is pretty fried.
The wheels are definitely starting to fall off as this cycle ends. Another “I’ve never had a top set at this weight” PR, and suplemental pressing without the cleans because my back is fried from yesterday. Now I just wrestle and deadlift, then Deload.
The school’s BJJ club just finished the process of getting approved, so the first meeting of that is coming up soon. No idea what scheduling will look like with that introduced.
Everything felt great tonight. I focused on staying on my offense during live, and picked up five or six takedowns during the neutral go. Hit the cleanest slide-by of my life for number four. Hit a couple of suck-backs (criminally underrated move that got me the majority of my senior year pins and the most near-fall points on my team despite missing a third of the season) on top, transitioned into a Turk for the stick on the last one. And then I got leg rode into fucking oblivion on bottom, lol. That’s definitely something to work on.
