Creatinine, GFR, & Kidney Disease

My apologies if there is another thread that addresses this issue, but has anyone else out there discussed their estimated Glomular Filtration Rate (GFR), the creatinine levels in their blood, and/or possible kidney disease with their doctor?

I recently saw a doctor that expressed concern about the creatinine levels in my blood (about 1.3-1.5) and the corresponding estimated GFR. She had me freaked out talking about kidney disease and dialysis, but then I saw a Board certified endocrinologist who told me not to worry about anything.

Based on lab reports I reviewed, my GFR does appear to be low. However, I am 6 feet tall and weigh about 240 pounds with 20% body fat and have read that people of my size can have higher levels of creatinine, especially if they eat a lot of protein and/or work out (I do both).

I actually went back through military medical file and discovered that my creatinine levels have been 1.2-1.3 or higher for the last 14 years, but no other doctor has ever expressed concern.

I was just wondering if anyone else has experienced and/or researched this type of issue. Any information regarding your own research and/or experience would be appreciated.

Thanks!

Do you have low blood pressure compared to normal ranges? This would be the first suspect, most likely, but GFR is controlled by a variety of factors, more than just blood pressure.

Also, because the other docs haven’t been too worried and it’s only one, I wouldn’t give it much of a thought. I think some have seen more patients than others and know when to read outside the normal reference ranges.

High blood pressure actually runs in my family, but mine is good - usually about 110-120/70-90. My cholesterol, however, is high - usually 200-230, unless I’m on meds.
