Does anyone here know where the hardcore gyms in Australia(Melbourne in particular) are? I’ve gone to heaps of gyms all around Melbourne and they all look the same with crappy machines dominating and the same people working out and never progressing. I want to go to a proper gym with serious lifters but everywhere in Melbourne sucks! You should see the prices of supplements here aswell. You need to be Mr Moneybags to get most of the good shit here. Im so sick of my gym and need a more challenging environment. I’ve never even been offered steriods and wouldnt even know where to start getting them even if i wanted to. IS ANYONE HERE FROM MELBOURNE??? If so, where are the good gyms/supplements/steriods(just curious about the roids, undecided yet). People usually adapt to their surrounding and thats why i want more of a hardcore scene. Hope i get some local input soon. cyas!
Start your own gym. Make some money. Buy your supplements.
I think all the serious lifters go to Dohertys gym in brunswick. I train at Underworld in the city.Good equipment, never too packed, 24 hours. I like it
You don’t need local input. You need common sense input. Your gym is what you make it. You need to tune out and focus on your reason to be at the gym. I work out in a social flesh factory sometimes, but I learned to tune it out for the most part. So quit blaming everyone and your surroundings. Take RESPONSIBILITY for your workouts, quit looking for the EASY WAY to get big–the steriod stupidity. Stop worrying about others not progressing, since you don’t know their life story, maybe they have progressed far more than you have. KEEP FOCUSED, QUIT BLAMING OTHERS, QUIT BLAMING YOUR SURROUNDINGS, AND TAKE RESPONSIBILITY FOR YOUR FITNESS.!!!
What suburb are you in?
Quest you have me all wrong. Im no slackass. I workout hard and i can enjoy myself being in family type gym. The thing is, im tired of these type of surroundings and want a more serious atmosphere. Im not “blaming” anything or anyone, its just that theres a time to move on and i think the time has come. Saying things like “steriod stupidity” aint so smart itself. You can bust you ass all you want, eat shit loads and still not put on the muscle you desire. STERIODS CAN BE SAFE YOU KNOW? Anyway i said i was curious, not something i’ve set in stone. WHATS WRONG WITH SURROUNDING YOURSELF WITH SERIOUS LIFTERS??? It give you ideas and inspiration to workout with people as dedicated as you are. Been thinking of training at Underworld but the membership is a bit too expensive and i live in the SE suburbs. Also still wondering where to get cheap supplements in Melb?
Hey skippy, which gym are you currently training at? I live in melbourne too.
First of all, you should adopt a more positive mindset. Someone who had never been to Melbourne and read your post would think the gym scene here is no more advanced than Afghanistan! There are certainly good gyms around. Just avoid anything with the words ‘fitness centre’. Places like Lifestyle, Fitness First, A1 etc, feature wussy, testosterone-sapping atmospheres that would make any serious trainer puke.
If you live near Richmond, Muscle and Bodyshape Gym in Wangaratta Street (near the Richmond station) is a great gym. The owner, George Tabban, is a genuine good guy. It has a lot of the equipment from Rocco Oppedisano’s old gym, plus some neat new stuff. (It is one of the few gyms I’ve ever been to that actually has a Glute-Ham Raise). It has a large free-weight area, doesn’t get too crowded. The clients here tend to do well
in bodybuilding and fitness contests. Good hardcore facilities without the shitty ‘wankers-on-roids’ attitude.
If you live over the other side of town, Bell St Gym on Bell St,near the Sydney Rd intersection at Coburg, is a pretty good, and very popular, gym also. Well-equipped, young crowd, upbeat atmosphere, lots of well-built folks. Clients here tend to do well in physique contests as well. (Check out the cafe downstairs, they sell killer steaks, free-range chicken breasts and BIG protein shakes). Sonny Schmidt used to enjoy training here.
If you live out Dandenong way Mike’s Gym is supposed to be pretty hardcore, but I have never been there.
The Bodyworld Gyms at Camberwell and St.Kilda are supposed to be geared towards serious lifters too.
Also there is a weightlifting Gym at Hawthorn, where state and national level lifters train, spoke to a guy that trains there, some very strong guys there.
As far as supplements go, if you can get to Prahran go to ‘Health 4 U’ in Chapel St, dirt cheap. Otherwise check out the Great Earth Stores, or Evelyn Faye in the city.
Lastly, as far as a ‘challenging environment’-true motivation should come from within, not from your environment. Get to a decent gym by all means, but you are still going to have to bust ass to progress.
Thanks for the advice everyone. I live in the Waverley area of the S.E suburbs! I dont wanna say the name of the gym cos i dont wanna bag it or give a bad name. It has been pretty good up until now. But i will say ALL gyms in this vicinity suck! Might have to try these gyms suggested to me and thanks for the supplement info, hope they’re cheap. It sucks being a student with no job!!!
Oh yeah, forgot to ask if anyone knew where to buy fat calipers from? I’ve been to gyms/health shops/Rebel and still the “best” i could find was those Tatiana Body Fat Scales at over $200. I just want fairly accurate calipers so i can use in between proper fat test in the gym. thanks
yer…i know what u mean skippy in regards to crappy gyms…i train in mt waverly…the gym does the job so i cant complain…
MT WAVERLEY!!!.. Now how do i know a gym in Mt Waverley??(nudge nudge wink wink hehe) Are its intials F.B??? lol
Ok i fucked up!!! I meant the intials to be F.H!!! hehe
Have you been to Pinewood at Mount Waverley? Have not been there myself, but I believe it is a bit more serious than ‘F.H.’. If you are a poor student,Muscle and Bodyshape at Richmond is only $385 for a full year, which is pretty cheap compared to the prices other shitty fitness clubs are charging for inferior facilities. I don’t know if MBS is convenient for you,it is literally a 2 minute walk from Richmond station.
yer…F.H. sounds about right :)…ive been to pine wood…it s**ts all over F.H. as far as equipment goes, however, i couldnt knock back $150 for a 6 month membership at the F.H…occasionally i would go to MBS in richmond after work in sth melb, its only $5 a casual visit.
Ha! I live in Mt.Waverley.
I agree with surrounding yourself with a good group of people. There is a Melbourne in Florida USA! DUHHH–didn’t see that you are on the other side of the globe(lol). I just take the quiet, work out alone philosophy with me. I got this great set of headphones that tune out even the loudest growler. I just grew tired of giving a squeally response out loud–which shut them up real well.
Mt Waverley sounds like a popular place… I would have never thought i live and train near other T-Magers. This Pinewood place sounds promising… Never even heard of it before. I’ll have to look it up. Also $5 a visit to that Richmond place sounds really good for an occasional workout. STILL DONT KNOW WHERE TO BUY BODY FAT CALIPERS. I’ve tried almost everywhere! Its like they’re illegal or something! LOL
