Correcting an Imbalance

Jim,

I have a guy with a fucked up squat. He says he gets pain in his left knee and people keep telling him that he squats with his right foot slightly forward.

When I had him squat for me his feet are level, but as he drops into the hole he’s shifting his weight onto his right leg, causing his upper torso to twist as he lowers himself down. Because he’s now crooked in the rack he’s subconsciously sliding his right foot forward between reps.

I’d estimate that in the hole he probably has 70% of the weight on his right leg. He’s struggling to squat 315 for a single, which is well below where I think this guy should be for his strength (315 bench, 500 deadlift)

I have some ideas on how to correct this but I figured I’d ask if you’d seen anything like this before and ask for advice on how to handle it.

Has that person seen a sports or physical therapist to see if their hips are balanced. I had/have similar issues, not as extreme, mine caused by leg length differences and curved spine.
