Convincing Parents of Fish Oil

My parents are wary of anything that is sold in any nutrition store. They think multivitamins are the only supplement worth anything and even yelled at me when I bought my own Whey protein and brought it home.

Anyways, now I keep hearing about Fish oil ever since I started reading on T-Nation. It’s a hell of a supplement but I can’t get it. Flameout + Shipping is hard enough on my finances. There’s also the fact of the credit card, which I don’t have.

Currently, I’m using the sort of unpure GNC capsules that contain 180 mg DHA and 120 EPA. I’m hiding the Fish Oil bottle from my parents (that’s a first I bet) in my room. Not only that, but in order to get the 2-3g I have to take around 7 capsules a day.

My question is can anyone show me any studies that I can print out and show my parents them? Also, just how much should a 16 year, 5’4", 150 lbs, teenager take? I keep seeing 3-5 g and so I decided for me being a bit smaller to take in 2g.

Edit: The reasons I want to take fish-oil is for its anti-inflammatory effects as well. I have severe eczema as well as asthma. This is the first time I’m using a supplement + a good diet (parents at least were overjoyed when I showed them the diet from USCTrojan, albeit smaller).

Much appreciated T-Nation.

pubmed.com
search for fish oil and print off one of the 100’s of studies.

Thanks. PubMed has a confusing interface, but the John Berardi might suit up well.

Get a disposable/reloading credit card at any store like Longs, Walmart, WalGreens or Target. They should all have them.

Another case of ignorant parents… don’t worry kid, you’re not alone.

Fishoil, imo, is actually a lot more beneficial to take than a mere multivitamin/mineral.

If your worried i would get a bottle of oil rather then pills. For some reason my parents used to be suspicious of anything in pill form. Yet oils, that you would take a tablespoon of… i dunno. i guess it seemed traditional. Most peoples grandparents remember cod liver oil. Cod liver oil can be a usefull supplement and is also available at supermarkets. Which might make your parents happier. It also contains DHA/EPA.

Ask your parents about any illness, or medical problem they can think of. Then go to Google.com, enter that illness + fish oil. I read somewhere tha Coach Poliquin did this some 84 times, and became convinced that there just may be something to this fish oil stuff. Now he swears by it. Just help your parents out via Google.

The good news is that your parents care enough about you to be concerned.

My mom did the same thing. I bought whey protein and creatine and my mom more or less had a conniption fit. She’s a nurse of God-knows-how-long and I couldn’t figure out why she’d be so against me taking supplements which I heard would be good for me. I looked up studies (eventually lead to me finding T-Nation along with my friend) and gave her some information.

Turns out all she was trying to do was get me to know exactly what I was putting into my body and what it does once it’s in.

Well, it worked.

Then go to Google.com, enter that illness + fish oil.

That??s a horrible research methodology and his parents might be smart enough to notice. One could do the same thing for vitamin c, bee pollen, ginsing, about about a hundred other vitamins, minerals and herbs that are claimed to do everything from burning fat to curing breast cancer.

Just tell her that fish oil contains omega 3 fatty acids and then give her this list:

* Omega-3 fish oil may help relieve stubborn depression in adults and children.
* Omega-3 fish oil may reduce symptoms of rheumatoid arthritis such as morning stiffness and tender joints.
* Omega-3 fish oil may reduce angina.
* Omega-3 fish oil may suppress production of fat cells.
* Omega-3 fish oil may help cope with psychological stress and lower cortisol level.
* Omega-3 fish oil may reduce production of arachadonic acid, suppressing 5-LOX, 5-HETE, and Leukotriene B4, all of witch contribute to prostate cancer.
* Omega-3 fish oil may help boost children's intelligence.
* Omega-3 fish oil may help lower the risk of developing breast, colon, and prostate cancer.
* Omega-3 fish oil may reduce the risk of asthma symptoms.
* Omega-3 fish oil may help with or ameliorate a wide range of mental disorders and disturbances, such as depression, bipolar disorder, Alzheimers disease, aggression, memory loss, and learning difficulties.
* Omega-3 fish oil may reduce the risk of irregular heartbeats.
* Omega-3 fish oil may help prevent cardiovascular disease including fatal and non-fatal heart attacks, strokes, sudden cardiac death, and coronary artery disease (angina).
* Omega-3 fish oil may reduce susceptibility to ventricular arrhythmia.
* Omega-3 fish oil may decrease platelet aggregation.
* Omega-3 fish oil may reduce triglyceride levels.
* Omega-3 fish oil may retard atherosclerosis.
* Omega-3 fish oil may lower blood pressure.
* Omega-3 fish oil may promote nitric oxide induced endothelial relaxation.
* Omega-3 fish oil may have anti-inflammatory effects.
* Omega-3 fish oil is recommended for diabetes and hypertension.
* Omega-3 fish oil may relieve symptoms of dysmenorrhea (painful menstruation).
* Omega-3 fish oil may relieve symptoms of schizophrenia.
* Omega-3 fish oil may be beneficial in patients with ulcerative colitis when added to standard therapy.

But if your parents are fresh off the boat (like mine are), they probably wouldn’t give a fuck/care.

Hey everyone thanks for the advice. Just checked all the posts and the credit card seems good. If i can’t find one I’ll open a PayPal account. As for convincing part, I’m printing these tonight. Thanks for the convenient list bobo.

The good thing about doing this search via Google is that his parents can understand the search. I say that with the thought that my child is much more knowledgeable on the internet than I am. The parents are less abpt to think they child is being sold a 'bill of goods".

hehe, my folks used to give me shit years ago when I was still at home, buying MET-Rx and such.

Now, 15 years later, they’re both Type II Diabetic with lousy blood lipid profiles, grossly overweight :frowning:

My dad used to always say, “you’ll see son…you’ll get older and you’ll get fat too”

I never will forget the time I caught my dad frying up fish filets with my Udo’s Choice oil blend…I almost cried :frowning:

Now they’re constantly asking me for advice after their doctor basically told them to lose weight or pick out a casket, trying to figure out why I’m 33, 6’5", and 265lbs at around 8-10% bf year-round.

I would hope it doesn’t take that for your folks to “see the light” but I s’pose whatever allows them to understand what you’re doing and why…

and ck out www.netspend.com for a pre-paid debit card. It’s basically a checking account but you can use your card anywhere VISA is accepted. You can load money on it at all kinds of diff places too so it’s pretty painless.

I finally got my dad to start taking fish oil and exercising. I called his insurance agent to take out an additional policy on him. He got the hint.

Tell them to go to the doctor. Most doctors seem to rave about fish oil, particularly in older adults.

I am trying to convince my parents that the fish oil was not the cause of some memory slipups they had when they first started taking it, but they quickly understood the benefits of taking it. have them talk to a trusted doctor, and read a couple of articles.

I, as well as others, have noticed improvements in my skin from taking fish oils. Tell your parents fish oil is good for your skin, and they might be more leniant for it being as it is you have eczema.

Fish oil really is the shit.

everyone on earth no matter age shape or health should take fish oil if possible
