Control Calories per Meal

Hey there,

After going off of “the lifestyle” for a while, I’m back and trying to cook everything as healthy as possible. My target calories are only about 2100-2300 right now…

I made this omelet this morning, and plugged it into fitday. It seems that I’ve got a huge portion right here and I was just wondering if your meals look this calories dense:

Omelet
5 egg whites
1 egg
1-2 oz cheddar cheese
1 big handful of spinach
1/2 cup chopped onions
1 tbsp olive oil
3-4 sun dried tomato in olive oil slices
2-3 oz of turkey

It came ouut to about 650 calories, P/C/F of 56/15/40

Is this too big or is this about what I should be eating? It was absolutely delicious, it’s just that it was pretty calorie dense. I was under the impression your first meal of the day should have a decent serving of carbs in it to replace what stores you’ll need for the day?

Kyle

A couple of things, 2300 calories seems a bit low. What’re your stats? Also since it was breakfast (presumably) 650 cals is also not very much. Back when I was counting calories (I was eating around 2500-2800 a day to cut)my breakfast would be around 900 calories.

Yeah, I know that 2300 is a bit low, but I just came off of the v-diet (used it to jumpstart myself back into respectable bf percentages), so I didn’t want to jack up the calories too high.

I still want to lose some body fat, so I suppose I should keep my calories around my maintenance level of about 2500-2700 calories, but I need to play around with it.

I know that the way to avoid getting off track is to stick to a program, but live and learn eh? On the v-diet I was down to about 1300/1700 cals on nontraining/training days, so I figure that this is a good number to bump up to.

I had a rocky transition due to vacation, and this week laser eye surgery recovery, so the calorie numbers aren’t too important as far as gently bumping up off the 1300/1700.

I was going to go with 2100/2500 training/nontraining days for a while and see how that goes. My stats are as follows: 175 lbs., 14-15% body fat.

By the way, I’ll be finishing up the T-Nation transion workouts (intermediate) for a couple weeks, then move on to ABBH part I following that. I think that with some extra energy systems work that I should be in a good place to lose some fat and maybe add a little mass… Am I being too conservative?

I think you’ll be more pleased with your results if you focus on one or the other. Gaining muscle or losing fat. It’s possible to do a little bit of both, but it’ll be much less effective.

So I’m a bit confused about how to build training programs for fat loss… Should I just use one of the ones here on T-Nation, or can I build my own? Is it pretty common for fat loss programs to be one of the following:

  1. A circuit style training such as the Meltdown Series or Fat to Fire or 2) Heavy weights with relatively low volume and some HIIT and moderate cardio on the side to increase the calorie deficit?

It depends on you. Something like Meltdown (which worked great for me) burns more calories. Heavy weights gives your body a reason to preserve muscle mass. Try both out and see which works.

Did you like meltdown I, II, or III more? They’re so different, yet so similar it’s hard to say…

I think II was my favorite, the exercises just seemed to go together better
