Constant and Consistent Illness

I get sick every 3 - 5 weeks. My symptoms usually involve excessive phlegm, sore throat, body aches, fever, headaches. Is there anybody out there that experiences the same thing? I’ve tried all sorts of things to break away from this habit, but to no avail.

I’ve tried:
-adding more than 1 rest day during the week (also not working out if I feel “too tired”)

-increased intake of vitamins and other
herbs/supplements that supposedly target the immune system

-cut out alcohol completely, not even a sip over the last 12 months

-increased the amount of sleep I get (I used to work a lot of hours and only managed 3 - 5 hours of sleep a night. I am now unemployed and sleep at least 8 hours a night.)

-improved my diet and incorporated tons of veggies/fruits.

-i’ve seen a couple of doctors including a ear, nose, and throat specialist and they didn’t have much to say

-i’ve been tested for allergies; all negative

So with all of that being said…anybody have any other ideas to break away from constantly getting sick?

stress ?

when I first started lifting, for the first couple months like clockwork, I think it was somewhere in the neihborhood of every gosh i want to say 8 weeks or so, I would get a cold. happened to me 2 or 3 times, until i started taking a week off after every couple months, then by that time my diet was clean and healthy and its went away altogether.

Is it a coincidence? Maybe who knows, but I also know that I havent been sick in nearly a year and a half, when I used to be sick once or twice a year.

Just my .02

Thanks for the ideas/opinions. I know everybody is different…I was just hoping to find someone with a similar situation. I am going to continue to try different things. I have tried back off weeks in the past with no success. Stress may be a key issue too but the funny thing is I use lifting and conditioning to relieve stress…kind of a double edged sword I suppose.

Once I get off my lazy butt (I’m sick right now) I think I am gonna post my workout program to see if some ppl think I am doing too much (or too little for that matter).

I’ve been combating the same things myself. Things I’ve found that help me.

Meditation/Deep Breathing
-Lay on your back with hand on your chest and one on your stomach like 2 fingers on the belly button and 2 beneath it.

-Breathe in deep into your stomach without raising raising your chest.

-Exhale completely so your chest deflates a bit

-Inhale again trying to go deeper and fill your stomach

-Practice it for a number of breaths or a set time. At first 3minutes may seem long but eventually your patience grows and it becomes easier to go longer

Acupuncture
-Going once a week does wonders for me, especially if I feel like am getting ill. The next I will feel much more rested

-Doubles as meditation because you lay there for 30minutes in silence

Juicing
-More vitamins and high doses. I like to juice spinach carrots and beets at least 3 times a week

Avoiding cheese
-Personally I’ve found eating cheese makes me ill with a light fever that eventually just leads to my immune system becoming crap and my energy levels get drained.

-Eating it now and then is ok but if I eat cheese continuously for days in decent amounts it makes me ill or eating it in large amounts in a sitting or day

Avoid Wheat
-This is tough to do but I have found doing it for at least 3 days in a row my energy levels become constant throughout the day

-Eat more rice, it seems to be neutral and its what I eat when substituting for wheat

Add Greens
-Chlorella or alfalfa. Choose one and begin using it daily. They both have different effects so experiment with a week on one then the other and see which offers you better benefits.

-Don’t over do these at first, start slow. I made myself ill by jumping full force into them

Work on your posture
-Lay on your foam roller with your arms out to the side bent at the elbow. Stretches the chest

-Stretch the upper traps and levator, pecs, lats. Opens up the lungs so you can breathe deeper

This is just my opinion on what helps and doesn’t. Its just my personal experiences.
