Consolidate Political Topics

I have a proposition. Actually, I am basing it off of a good idea Lumpy had on one of Wasted Years many picture-album threads:

We should attempt to keep one thread per topic, rather than splintering off a bunch of different threads on the same topic and clogging the board.

Sometimes it’s unavoidable, as when two people post new threads on the same topic overnight or closely enough together that they don’t see the other threads. However, it seems that most of the redundant threads are avoidable.

Now this is just my opinion, and I would love to hear what everyone else thinks, but I cannot see why we needed to have 5 different threads on Michael Moore and Fahrenheit 9/11, or 3 different threads on Ken Lay’s indictment.

As to Wasted Years, I plan to follow Zeb’s advice and just ignore his threads.

That is a excellent suggestion Boston! And do hope everyone would agree to it. For and I have been guilty of this too, you see a posting on the net. Or a news story. And you really do not want to link it to anyone topic. Perhaps the topic is too long, or you just feel this is such a hot topic that you want the group to see it. Or this topic just does not fit in.Or perhaps you feel you like to get a rile from either side of the aisle. Or ones blood pressure to skyrocket. So what do you do, you post it on another topic. So all could see and view. Instead of linking it to another topic, and as you stated, just totally clogs up the board.

What we should do is yes we all know those jokes, pics, sayings, quotes, stories, etc, are out there. With both sides. And there is really no need to keep bringing them up in this board., time and time again.Let us stick to substance the issues. What is going on in the world today. And how we view and see it. Both sides. And refrain from the name calling, or calling the Presient a moron. Or John Kerry… a far leftist. If we are going to say anything like that back it up. Tell us why you feel either one or whoever is one. I know when it comes to politics and the world, people have very strong views about it. But the same can be said about any topic. Case in point you want to see real heated arguements, just go into one of the Civil War group forums, or message boards. I have got into so many bitter argurments over the battle of Gettysburg, that it is a good thing I do powerlift, to release the stress!!

People feel very strongly about some things, and just will not or could not see the other side. ANd because they cannot, all hell breaks loose. And if both sides, are not willing to at least read or look at what we take the time to post. Or to research, and try to see where we are coming from. Then why even have this board.

So many times on these forums or message boards or groups, I see so many excellent excellent posts. From all sides, And yet on the next topic or post, it is as if no one took the time to read your post or even link to what you wanted someone to read.

Its just like with the workout sections, or bodybuilding, powerlifting forums so many of us belong to. We post a pic of ourleves, or training. Or video. And people critique the pic or video. They tell us why you could be doing this wrong or should be doing that. And then the person who posted the pic video etc. says yeah I can see your point. We have to take the same viewpoint with this forum. You make a posting, back it up. Tell us why do you feel ths way. Back up your sources. And let us too refrain from saying like so many say Newsmax is so far right…or condemn this website that website. Again both sides are equally
at fault for doing this. For I am sure if you go on google or any websearch
you will find more people feel the same way the author of that article, or writer said.

And as far as Lumpy and Right side up and Wasted Years, and a few others, on this board. If they make some sense and can back up with what they saw or post, and why they do. In a very adult like non name calling manner. Then I will read what they have to say. And either look into why do they say that. And try to show the other sides view. But if either side just spews out, and has nothing to back it up with, or tell us why, or name calls, then I won’t. Or even respond to it…

Hopefully Boston people in this very very good forum, could listen to what we are saying. Then this board will get even better, than it is…

Joe

Some of the threads are too long. I think a thread with over 100 posts about Fahrenheit 9-11 is too long. It takes too long to load.

Chuckmanjoe just wrote 7 long-winded paragaphs just to say he agrees with BB. If you are concerned with clogging up the forum, try condensing your thoughts

No shit!

Boston,

Excellent idea!

I also love the idea of raising the level of discourse. Name calling and basic immaturity needs to be ignored.

Lumpy/vroom:

I agree that threads can get too long and be a pain, but I still think there’s no reason to have 5 distinct threads on Michael Moore/Fahrenheit 9/11 that basically are clones of one another. If an original thread gets too long, by all means start a new one – but having 4 threads with 12 posts each doesn’t do anything but clog the forum and make for disjointed and confusing dialogue.

I think chucksmanjoe had a point about why a lot of those extra threads are posted: someone thinks he has a key insight that just NEEDS its own thread because it is so keen - but in reality it is just another post on the topic that belongs in the existing thread.

I like Wastedyears threads! Are we covertly trying to sensor people here through group influence?

No, feel free to enjoy. I will ignore them personally.

However, I do wish he would consolidate all his “funny pictures” on one thread. Or perhaps not start whole threads to say “Bush sucks.”

This sensor you are talking about. Would it actually count the number of people in the thread or would it be for measuring some other characteristic?

Elk,

“I like Wastedyears threads! Are we covertly trying to sensor people here through group influence?”

Well, since anyone can read this thread, I’d say that, no, it is not ‘covert’ at all.

And just because you have a right to speak doesn’t mean you have a right to be listened to. Ignoring someone is not censorship.

What Boston suggests, I support - it’s just good housekeeping.
