We all know that everyone starts somewhere.
We all know that people start seeing results right away.
But how long does it normally take for someone till they get to the level where they can really start considering competing? 5? 10?
Thoughts?

You can only compete once you belong to 4 different gyms.
Not a second before.
How many gyms does it take to total elite?

You can’t afford it.

That got a genuine laugh out of me.
As for how long it takes: Jay Cutler was winning shows in the heavyweight class a year and a half after he started training, so I guess a year and a half is the answer.
If you get swole today, then I don’t see a reason as to why you can’t step up on that stage and strut your stuff, big boy!
All depends on how you look. Some people can do everything right and create a stage ready physique in a few years. Others take a few wrong turns, stagger around aimlessly, and eventually find their way after 5 years, 10 years, maybe more.
I know that I wasted plenty of time, mostly because I didn’t have access to the “right” info, didn’t know how to fit the lifestyle into my ‘real’ life, and also probably wasn’t mature enough to dedicate myself day in and day out to dotting all my I’s and crossing all my T’s.

It definitely depends on what day you get swole. If you get swole today, instead of typing nonsense on the internet today, you may compete.

You know what’s funny? This might be the most sensible thread OP has started.

Certainly beats the other one he just started about old lady poop. I couldn’t even bring myself to comment on that one.

I don’t think it always matters how long someones been training. Anecdotally speaking, I’ve only been training for 3 years but I’m competing in < 5 weeks and through the Summer too.
As far as how long a prep should be–that is an entirely different topic.
