Confusion's One Workout per Week Log

Where are the wheels dude? Don’t tell me that’s only once every 2 weeks :slight_smile:

Something you should also consider as you embark on this venture is that your “window” to gain muscle at 42 is rapidly closing ( minus gear) … That’s why I personally (at 45) would rather flirt with overtraining than shortchange myself of valuable chances to stimulate some muscle before my nads turn into useless raisins

Not trying to dissuade you, but …tick…tick…tick…

Ever looked into doggcrap training? I think you would like it …3 x per week, but espouses many of the tenets you believe in

Just trying to help a fellow geezer out … I’ll be following regardless as this is beyond interesting!

Elvis, I will take a look at dog crap. I know a couple bodybuilders who did that several years ago and swore by it. I am with you on the age comments and logic. However,if I truly believe my ideas about training and recovery,then doing more just because i am running out of time will still have the same negative effect. I.e. i do too much,i wont grow.

You are tempting me to take it over the top, and i appreciate the motivation,but I have to put up or shut up about once a week training first. After that, i will consider trying another approach for a while. I am after all honestly trying to find whats best for my body and am open to other ideas. I got trashed on my other post and called a troll,etc. I must be true to myself and prove my point. Regarding wheels, how about every 3 weeks? Lol.

I’d like to never hit wheels again personally, but the guilt and shame won’t let me …

One of the most important things with any program is believing in it … Looks like you’ve got that covered, lol

Go for it man … Maybe take some before pics now and some more at the “end” - or whenever you want to really gauge the progress you made … Pictures often tell a different story then scale weight or increased poundges

I think this will be the most novel “program” on T nation … Who the hell only works out 1 day per week?

…Confusion does …

Those road trains sound impressive. Definitely tough to eat right when driving all day.

So have you done volume training recently and lost strength from it? But the abbreviated routine made things pick up?

Elvis, i will take some photos and post measurements from time to time,its all part of my plan. looking forward to it! you know bud that 40 is the new 20, right? Shouldnt be raisens for a while. Hehehe

Cav, after the usual initial stumbles and little to no success, i learned some lifts and trained 5 days a week. I also trained martial arts 3 days a week. I developed serious pain in my right rotator cuff and BAD pain in my elbows. I was doing all the correct warming up for blood flow and joint lubrication and all,but, my body hurt all the time. I pretty much reached a standstill in progress. I dont want to live in pain nor with injuries unless thats the only way to have muscle. A typical chest day was 3-4 sets each of barbell bench,dumbell incline bench,pec deck flies, and bodyweight dips. Anyway,now i have no pain to speak of except the usual muscle pain from the workout and an elbow might be tender for a day after. Also, i dont get discouraged by injury,as i,ve not had any,nor stressed about missing a workout. I take a week off sometimes when my schedule is hectic,with only minimal guilt. My genetics suck, i was a tall skinny guy with a belly,but i dont worry. Ive got what ive got to work with and do the best i can. For me,training less made life better in a lot of ways. By the way,it took a few months for the joint pain to go away,butnit wouldnt have if i had continued training the way i was. Confusion

Also,just a reminder that stronger doesnt necessarily mean bigger,as you know. Nor does throwing weights up and down necessarily stimulate the muscle to the max. Powerlifting as an example makes some guys really muscular,but not all. It has a large emphasis on technique to lift bigger amounts,but that doesnt mean the muscle is growing optimally. Acceleration and explosiveness play a big part. Weight throwing and weight lifting are not the same thing. I am NOT taking anything away from powerlifters or powerlifting. Just using this as an example. The top bodybuilders are very strong men also. They arent lifting world class weight,but in general, i think they look good and are strong. Just fyi i like the old school Y physique better than the modern X man

Love the land train. Do you have a usual route? My friend’s dad went across the north, so apparently if his truck died it was a near death sentence in the heat as no one drives along there.

I’m watching with keen interest. I worked out with a number of bodybuilders, but have never done it myself. I remember the huge debates of HIT vs. volume but all of my buddies were Arnie disciples so I only saw HITers on the internet, and it was always just in debates. I’ve never seen real results as they happen.

I drive to the northwest from perth and back once a week. This week i broke down for 2 days. Oh well, #6 injector failed. The boss had to pay a guy $90 per hour+80 cents per kilometer to drive drive from perth to fix the truck.its a bit over 500 kilometers each way. Anyhoo the Mack truck is running again and i will be home in about 3 days. When travelling in Oz,death from lack of water is a real threat. Its a huge place and towns most places are far apart. You learn quick tho. Lol

I came across hit quite by accident. Mentzer died in 2001 so his ideas are fading into the past. I love Arnie, he,s one of my few heroes. Got his bodybuilding manual and biography. so far,tho,hit works for me. Gonna see how far it can take me…

My wife was bitten by a red back(black widow)spider last night and spent the night having tests done at the hospital. I’m not home yet,but hope to be in several hours. my plan is to give her lots of attention and comfort. My next workout is going to be old school. Looking forward to it!

That sucks! Is she OK? I remember my brother freaking out about all the poisonous things he ended up face to face with just in his own home. I hope she is doing well. Can’t wait to hear about the next workout.

i am just getting home now. so far she is ok. i was helping someone move house and got bit by one of those little bastards in January. i just killed it and kept doing my thing,waiting to see if i needed to get medical attention. i was lucky,nothing happened. we all have different body chemistry ,tho. for some people a bite is very dangerous.

Corrmhona, What style karate did you study? shotokan?

Shitoryu
The one with the extra kata. I had learned 43 counting weapons by the end. Higher stances than shotokan, more cat stance to front stance shifting rather than back stance front stance, generally higher and quicker less power based. I am starting to fade so I’d need to get practicing if I’m going back, but basically a kata leaves me as nackered as a weight training set, and weight training does more for me physically I think.

i,m 1st dan hapkido and 2nd dan taekwondo. i always hated forms because they were difficult for me to remember. hapkido techniques can be very technical,but for some reason, they are easy for me to remember.

The forms are hard to remember, especially with so many of them, and some are 60+ movements in a ssequence. They range from light soft movements, to dynamic tension as well, so there isn’t a single “feel”.

My plan was to do dips,chins,smith machine squats,and abs. due to a lack of availability,here,s what i did.
9 days since my last workout
45 min in gym.
Attititude=pretty lousy.

I havent done these exercises in a while except pulldowns.

  1. bodyweight dips 10,10.9,5
    25 crunches on ab machine and decline ab bench in between sets 25 each.
  2. leg press starting with 2 plates,nice warmup,then added 2 plates for three reps up to 12 plates for three reps.
    3)wide grip lat pulldown. warmup then 2 sets of 5. failed on 5th rep both times.
    4)dumbell snatch. warmup then 1 rep 45kg with each hand.

Thats it boys and girls…
Back in the truck and heading north again. will add a few comments as i think of them. i plan to post my measurements from about a month ago,when i get back from my trip.

So, (analyzing mode)
dips=upper body press
crunches=obvious
leg press=lower body press
lat pulldown=upper body pull
DB snatch = lower body pull

So you are hitting pretty much every major muscle.

Questions:
Are you going to failure on dips and snatch or just pulldowns?
What is your tempo like?
How’s the wife?

I may have been able to do one more dip on the first set. Cadence on those was slow on the way down and much faster on the way up. DB snatch was explosive up,slow down. Yes, I am sad to say,one rep was failure. I noticed you doing them on your log and it motivated me.Thanks. My wife was flat on her back for 3 days. she is slowly getting better,she got nearly every possible symptom. she is still recovering now.
