Competitions?

Do they have natural bodybuilding competitions for guys over 45? If so, how do they organize it? By age brackets?

Also, have natural guys over 45 ever achieved notable success in body building? (I am just interested in natural.)

And if they don?t have competitions for guys over 45, is that because natural guys over 45 have so much difficulty putting on any mass?

And sorry to be so ignorant on all of this, but I have read about some of the juiced body builders doing well up until 40 or so. But I don?t recall ever seeing an article about any one over 45 who was natural?

In the UK we have a Masters category for men over 42 years old. I recently competed at the age of 52 for my first time in both the Masters & also Lightweight (under 72kg/158 pounds). The competition was natural. I was the oldest bloke on stage & one of the smallest in lean muscle mass. Maintaining LBM at my age is a challenge, adding LBM is a real challenge without some help.

So at 52 you think a realistic goal (for someone natural) is just to maintain the mass that you have already achieved?

Do you think any of the other competitors, who I know were all natural, around your age were/are able to add mass?

All I did for this first comp was to diet down from 83kg in January to 70kg in June. Losing the bodyfat was my aim & of course it was impossible to add any muscle during this phase.
My aim now is to keep my bodyfat below 12% and eat cleanly & train heavier to add LBM. I will be able to speak from experience in 6 months time
There were some experienced competitors in the Over 42 category who definitely added muscle naturally. The main difference was the fact that they had muscle maturity from years of lifting whereas it was my first attempt at a relatively late age, and after years of running, cycling, & circuit training.

Well, I’m state side, so all I have to do is find if they have competitions over here!

Whisper9999,

There are competions here in the states. Check out this website:

Click on “rules and regulation” on the left to see the classes. There are several masters classes.

Why 42? Is that some kind of English humor?
