You would love my gym. Especially the incoming sophomore class. Twiggy is an understatement. “yeah bro we’ll be ripped by the time we can squat a plate and 25”. Says nerdbag who quarter squats plates. I want to throw a 45 like a frisbee at these guys sometimes. We also have like 6 guys who just bench and curl, and use the squatrack for curls and abs.
High school gyms are just a sad reminder of how bad it gets in the real world.
Some high school gyms have serious lifters, if you go to a school that has a solid football program they usually have a good strength coach who has them lifting on a good program. Of course this is the exception, just like there are some great gyms with hardcore lifters.
There is this one guy at my gym who critiques me everytime I’m there. He is about 5’10, no more than 130 pounds, pale as a ghost with no muscle whatsoever. He comes up to me with his clipboard, pen and weightlifting gloves, telling me that deadlifts above 200 pounds shouldn’t be done, and that I should just do 195 to failure.
I didn’t even get mad, I just laughed my ass off. You can’t take douchebags seriously, inside the gym or out.

just lucky i guess!
i find that the people who are most likely to give free unwanted/useless advice are those who haven’t achieved much and don’t realise they’re talking shit
if they’re giving bad advice they won’t be progressing themselves, so it’s their loss
is yours a serious gym?
nope! commercial council gym… machines galore and fat house wives watching soaps.
My gym isn’t bad, its a Gold’s with a number of good lifters. Like I said, these guys are definitely tough. But as a skilled runner and swimmer, I never once downtalked the slower.
That is why I don’t understand why these dudes have to make a concentrated effort to downtalk me. Maybe it makes them feel better. Whatever, I ignore it anyway.

Just playing devil’s advocate here:
Maybe these experienced lifters notice what you’re doing and can see you have the ability to put forth more effort? Obviously how they’re going about it isn’t polite, but their intentions could be in the right place.
Back on topic:
I’ll occasionally check out what the more advanced lifters are doing and use it as motivation. There’s times where I feel like shutting it down for the day, only to see the stronger guys still going. I’ll then buckle down and get some more work in.
In my own experience, I realize that I was very lucky when I first started training in that the older, more experienced lifters would help me out, correct my form, offer suggestions etc.
Now, realizing that I’m one of the more ‘seasoned’ fellows, I will offer advice if I honestly think someone’s doing something nonproductive, or just dangerous. If I detect an attitude during the conversation, I will usually end my verse with "I’m just trying to help, so if you choose to listen, that’s great.
If not, you can call me an asshole under your breath, I won’t hear it over my headphones, and you can go right back to doing it the way you were,… no offense taken".
My gym is great so I rarely have to worry about any of this…I never have had anyone try and compete with me or offer me unwanted advice. One guy I started talking to was really pushing me to take NoXplode, i just told him i’d look into it, but it’s not like he just came up to me and started preaching his training philosophy.
I like my gym too. It’s really dumpy and there is shit all over the place. No one picks up. The good thing is that it doesn’t attract a lot of people trying to look pretty while they train. It’s often nearly empty.
I’ve never had anyone try to compete with me. That’s likely because I’m a woman and few people squat or deadlift. In fact, last Sunday I was doing light squats (142 lbs) for sets of 8-10 reps and I was feeling weak and crappy.
One of the big guys came up and told me I was really strong. I made a comment about the light weight and he said he never sees anyone go that deep. It really made my day. I would have kissed him but it may have been inappropriate.
“Maybe these experienced lifters notice what you’re doing and can see you have the ability to put forth more effort? Obviously how they’re going about it isn’t polite, but their intentions could be in the right place.”
Point taken. Although, adding 10lbs a week to my squat is totally cool with me.
Regarding advice on form corrections, I welcome that with open ears. Some guy who I have never seen squat in his life told me to assume a very wide grip in the bar. He told me to grab the plates to prevent my leaning forward. I admit, I did not heed this advice as I had never seen it done anywhere or discussed on these boards. Plus I did not feel like losing my grip as the plate rotated. Has anyone done this, by the way?

Well, we do have a serious football program, but when it’s football season…

It is funny how some of the people who need the advice the most are the ones who get upset the most when it is given out. I would never say something stupid like that or belittle your lift, if I did not know you. I have jokingly told people I know to lift heavier and offered advice, but only when asked. I will repeat the sentiment that is said around here all the time. I work at a gym part time and the skinny guys who want to gain mass are as bad as the obese people who ride the stationary bike for an hour while reading a magazine. In a lot of cases, they make zero progress and would greatly benefit from advice. You may be making progress, good work by the way, but alot of people are not.

I was going to say something, but it wasn’t anything that I didn’t cover in a post on the second page. I’m not even sure why I kept this avatar for this long, anyway.
