damn otoko knows his kickboxing.
Couple questions:
- What combat sport does anyone here participate in-
Grew up in TKD, black belt in the WTF. A few years in ninjitsu. I don’t do anything now due to an Arterial-Vein malfunction in the base of my skull/ spine.
- Which one’s do you enjoy watching
I love it all. Boxing is my least favorite (despite enjoying it) and ever since I was a little kid, I always wanted to know why they couldn’t kick each other or wrestle etc etc. So as it has all unfolded over the years, I just became happier and happier as a fan. I understand why they wear the big 16 oz gloves, but I always wished it was bare knuckle. MMA being my favorite obviously, but I am also a fan of the olympic sports, something about the competitive atmosphere of the olympics just amps me up.
- Who are some of your favorite fighters
I don’t have a favorite fighter. I usually end up rooting for whomever is losing at the given moment. Sort of like what Forrest said in the new TUF. I just enjoy watching exciting fights. But I do have a soft spot for fighters who aren’t ashamed to represent their TKD backgrounds. Too much negative press associated with TKD and it has it’s merits like all styles do. David Loiseau for example. I know Yves Edwards used to claim TKD and Ninjitsu but like a lot of the fighters who used to claim TKD backgrounds, they’ve all but wiped them off their resumes in favor of “kickboxing” or a general statement of having a karate background.
- A lot of us the MMA Hub thread as our training blog… should we create individual ones here, continue to use the Hub thread, or start to use our profiles.
Keep em in the hub, I hate seeing a long list of training blogs when I am trying to look for a thread. but then again I don’t train anymore, so I don’t consider my opinion worth much.
- what kind of lifting do you do to improve your performance.
I do a 3 day based on the deadlift, front squat and push press. also do kettlebell circuits with a 53lber at home for general conditioning.
Anyone train at Legends in Hollywood, CA?
I live right by there, but have never stuck my head in. Don’t want the temptation lol.

Hey Xen,
-
Judo at the provincial and national level. Catch, submission, freestyle, gi/no-gi, whatever I can get. Muay Thai for 3 years now. MMA training/sparring/prepping with local fighters. I find myself transitioning into more coaching and less competing as I get older.
-
I don’t get alot of time to watch much of anything these days, I’ll usually watch whatever my friends send me. They have their own favorites/interests so I get to see a wide variety of different stuff that I might otherwise have missed. I could watch judo all day though if given the choice.
-
I admire and respect so many fighters for so many different reasons, I don’t think I could list them all. I guess my top 10 would be (past and present, in no particular order),
Kimura Masahiko,
Koga Toshihiko,
Emelianenko Fedor,
Kharitonov Sergei,
Vovchanchyn Igor,
Kevin Randleman,
Dan Henderson,
Mauricio Rua,
Wanderlei Silva,
Sakuraba Kazushi,
the list could go on and on… -
I like the hub, lots of good training ideas and information all in one place.
-
Twice a week, olympic lifts and compound movements (conjugate/westside ME/DE stuff). And twice a week, circuits with strongman implements (keg, sandbag, sledgehammer, sled, big tire, etc.) mixed in with sprinting and wrestling drills.

Dumbbell snatches, clean and press etc for power. High rep circuits for muscular endurance.
I have a bunch of friends who train at Legends, they mostly just do the jiujitsu (eddie bravo, 10th planet) though. Let me know what you need to know about over there. I fought a couple of their guys in smoker’s too.
Jonny, Ray is a cool ass motherfucker

Tiger Muay Thai, the gym I train at, sets up really good deals for people who want to train and fight in Thailand. Not just Muay Thai guys but lots of good MMA guys come here, we just got a new cage set up. Take a look at the website, it’s an awesome experience here.
Hallo forum!
Great to finally have a combat sports only board. I hope we can discuss all aspects of fighting (sports) in a non-retarded way.
My own background is 90% standup, eg Tae Kwon Do, Boxing, Thai/Kickboxing.
Various submissions, throws and locks I either had to train with my buddies or come from a few years of half assed Hapkido. This is definitely my weak point which I will focus on in the next two years.
I happily watch MMA, Sumo, chessboxing and just about everything that involves two guys trying to beat themselves.
Also, I’d rather watch something “real” like Bum Fights before watching something really artificial and rule restricted like Fencing.
Girl Mud Wrestling being the exception.
Favorite Fighters are either technically superb standup fighters like Roy Jones Jr or Crocop or “unorthodox” ones like Price Naseem Hamed or Lyoto Machida. (The unorthodox label as a concept, however, is greatly misleading. It’s more the mark of an intelligent fighter who uses his mind to confuse his opponent or impose his own rules in the ring)
Not really sure, perhaps use the (or a new) Hub Thread as a link library, along with a description.
As to lifting weights, I’m still kinda unsure if there are ideal ways of training for martial arts.
The perfect fighter probably has to bulk up muscularly a little in his life with more or less traditional bodybuilding, can experience great results from certain explosive barbell or dumbbell moves and must surely practise his sport specific bodyweight exercises and drills diligently. Most fighters also profit from health related exercises (correcting posture, strengthening weak synergists…). Throw in some cardio on top and you’ll have just too much training.
Low rep heavy compound moves worked best for me. I’m not a fan of the snatch, but whenever I have access to weights I do all sorts of cleans. All forms of Core exercises I consider a must, be it mindless situps or low rep zerchers. Working out upper body strength is a tad more important then working on legs because usually, the necessary leg power can naturally derive from your training more then say, arm or upper back force. In other words, I consider curls more important then leg curls for most fighters.
All this said, if you have great fighting buddies who will train with you at all times, extra (light) sparring or rolling sessions should be preferred over lifting weights.
As I have no access to weights right now, various unilateral exercises and dynamic callisthenics form the bulk of my workouts.
