I agree. The last thing I want to see this forum become is another Powerful Women or Muscle Sorority forum where every single post is someone’s training log.
I vote to have everyone keep posting their workouts (strength, conditioning, MA classes) in the Training Hub thread.
Let’s use the forum to discuss things like the latest goings on in the MMA world and for discussions on the various types of training techniques that are out there.
I also think it would be a cool idea if people posted reviews of some of the MMA training books that are out there…

WORD. I have had Jason Ferruggia’s fit to fight, Renzo Gracie’s BJJ: Theory and Technique, and BJ Penn’s MMA: Book of Knowledge in my Amazon cart for weeks now, and I can’t decide which or all to buy.

BJJ (both Gi and no-Gi) and muay Thai. Hopefully over the summer I can finally get into some MMA classes.
MMA, muay Thai, kickboxing and I do still enjoy boxing if there’s a good fight on.
GSP
Anderson Silva
Randy Couture
BJ Penn
Fedor
Big Nog
Rich Franklin
Wanderlei Silva
Rampage
Cro Cop
Chuck Liddell
Tito Ortiz (he’s not the greatest fighter but dude’s fights are always full of electricity and I appreciate that)
Clay Guida
Keep it in the Training Hub thread. We don’t need another Muscle Sorority or Powerful Women forum filled with logs.
Currently lift 2 days a week, with a focus on total body workouts. Keep reps relatively low (3-8) and use a lot of multi-joint exercises to keep my gym time short.
I also do conditioning work a couple of times a week. Anything from bodyweight circuit to complexes to sprints. I try to switch it up frequently.
re: “logs”, mod’s please take note ![]()
I have Diesel Crew’s “Building The Ultimate MMA Fighter” I’ll find the review I typed and repost it.

None right now, but have competed in judo. Also worked with a boxing trainer for some time. I’m just a super fan.
Boxing, MMA, muay thai, kickboxing, grappling, wrestling…I would probably watch TKD if it was on TV.

Kelly Pavlik
Joe Calzaghe
Miguel Cotto
Peter Aerts
Rob Kaman
Ramon Dekkers
Buakaw
(I know muay thai aficiandos are going to rape my ass for this stereoptypically Dutch-centric list, but I don’t get to follow much stadium fighting and know there are many better who don’t get publicity)
No, the forum is not set up in a manner to make individual logs efficient.
I compete in powerlifting and am competing in my first strongman event in September at 231.

Wow, I feel a lot better about this now that donut of all people said that he doesnt compete in any combat. I wasnt going to answer this, as mma is the one sport where I’m really just an armchair fan, and I typically hate armchair fans. All the other sports I follow I’ve competed in on at least some level. I wrestled 7th -10th grades and I trained jkd and muay thai one summer, but didnt continue that in part because it was taking away from my strength training.
mma. I can’t stand boxing actually
ok, I’ll probably get slammed for this, as they are almost all ufc guys, but at least I’m honest. In no particular order
Griffin
Leben (I will pay to see almost any fight these two are in, as I know they’re going to leave it all in the ring/cage)
Fedor - (his fight vs coleman is the only one i’ve seen live since he hasnt really fought that much since I’ve been able to find fights on the web)
Rampage
Anderson Silva
BJ Penn
Florian
Sakuraba
Couture
Vera - I know he’s only had a few, but he’s made em exciting
Nate Diaz - I hated him before the pellegrino fight but he won me over. to take the beating that he took, hang in there and then sink that SWEET friggin triangle was awesome.
Faber
I’m still workign my way thru mma scraps’ library of content

Well, I compete in strongman, so i dunno if this applies to me, but one day of event training, two gym days on an upper/lower split, heavy compound movements.
Donut, that is AWESOME! what show?

I train with Mike Robertson. Great guy! He has me doing a lot of heavy stuff for my legs and some rehab for a back problem. I do a lot of lunges, step ups, and front squat grip stuff to stregthen my gulp “core”. I have a fight coming up June 14th, so I’ll be shifting my training soon I’m sure. I’m to meet with him tomorrow to discuss.
I’ve been doing Isshinryu Karate for the past eight years. It’s a derivation of Shorinryu and Gojuryu.
Have done a “warehouse style” of TKD and Muay Thai years ago. Was in an actual warehouse, and the instructor was a 4th black in TKD and had done MT for years. Ranked us only in TKD, though, and only noted a few Muay Thai techniques over the years. We sparred uber-hard, though.
Have done brazilian jiu jitsu, and continue to do so whenever I can. Will be trying to make it up to Little Rock to West Side Fight Club to workout with the guy who used to roll with my Isshinryu school a few years ago.
K-1, Muay Thai, some UFC events, the occasional TUF, replays of the Gracie killer (or just about any Pride fight)
ll listed by other posters. I love watching anything done with skill. My personal favorites are the indestructible Fedor and the too-fluid George St Pierre. Bas Rutten takes the top, though.
The hub gives a nice cross-section of what the various trainees are up to at a glance.
I usually do two, full-body workouts a week. Right now, my focus lifts are the squat and the chin-up. I can’t place a bar across my back because of a few back injuries, so the best I can manage is the goblet squat.
I train primarily for back health maintenance, strength, hypertrophy, and then karate performance. I want to be as muscular as possible at 190lbs, and then as strong. It’s going to take me a while, though, since I am limited in my squatting and deadlifting.
I love combat sports, and the training paradigm of MMA (test against resistance when and as often as possible), but I’m a karate guy at heart.
KBC & Donut,
I didn’t mean to make it exclusive to guys who train a combat sport just skip that part and fill us in on who you are ![]()
Donut,
I’m sad that I forgot to mention Ramon Dekkers, great call, and yes very stereotypical list but its not like they arent legends in their own right…
and good luck in your PL and Strongman Comps
DaneW,
Love to have you contribute some stuff regarding your rehab and/or what mike has you doing.
Vash,
Great to have another karate guy! much respect to you guys, you really do train hard. Love to hear how you work around your injuries.
anyway consensus seems to keep all logs of any sort confined to the Hub.
None so I’m only an armchair fan at this time. Whenever I get more free time I’d like to train in one of the striking-based sports. I just want to hit and get hit. lol…
MMA, Boxing (well, except most HW fights), kickboxing whenever it’s on TV.
Forrest Griffin
Cro Cop
Rampage
Wandy
Shogun
Pretty Boy Floyd Mayweather aka Money aka Young Flash aka…eh not really. I just felt like writing that.
I don’t care because unless I start fight training I won’t read them anyway.
N/A for this forum, but I lift 4x/week (lower 2x, upper 2x) primarily for strength gains. Nothing too fancy.
Oh, and I got a quick question that’s been bugging me for awhile; what the hell does “WAR” mean?
[quote]KBCThird wrote:

It’s a NAS show in Xenia, Ohio. The events are real fucking crazy, lol. I have some people to work the log press with and some medleys. I threw shot and discus, and one of the events is a weight throw medley so unless I get some sort of idea what the implements will be for that I’m hoping my experience pays off.
There is nothing wrong with just being a fan, as long as you admit it. The problem with MMA and boxing “fans” is that there is something in the male psyche that makes us all think that we are the best fighter and fucker on the planet, and so you get douche bags who watch the UFC and think they are fighters because they wear Affliction shirts and take BJJ beginner classes once a month.
Nice. Just noticed this forum. Nice development.
Vash, where are you from in Arkansas? Next time you make it up to Little Rock, tell them Joey C. says “The We$t$ide is the best side.” They’re good friends of mine down there.
Anyway, for the general questions:
I’ve trained in BJJ and kickboxing for 5-6 years now, boxing a little longer, and dabbled in some Shorin Ryu karate in junior high. Competed in gi and no gi grappling, kickboxing, and MMA…won some and lost some, you know
I train at Gracie Barra Arkansas (www.groundfighters.com), and as of May 1 I’ll be the official boxing instructor there (working on registering with USA Boxing as we speak.)
For some reason I enjoy watching the components of MMA better than MMA itself. I’ll take boxing, K-1, or NCAA wrestling over the UFC 9/10 times.
As a tall, skinny, left-handed guy, Anderson Silva is my role model. I really like the Diaz brothers too.
I don’t keep a training blog, maybe I’ll look into it though.
I keep it VERY basic, and my lifting changes a lot based on when/what kind of fight I have coming up. Right now I’m just doing a ton of bodyweight exercises because my shoulder and hip have been bugging me, but I’m starting to think low volume heavy lifting would be better than hundreds of push-ups and lunges, you know? So I’ll probably switch it up soon. You guys know way more about that stuff than I do though, that’s why I’m here.

Couple questions:
bjj, wrestling, and muay thai. Well the muay thai is kind of/not really right now. We used to have a good instructor, then we got some kind of Tae Bo/ Tae Kwon Do guy who does all sorts of weird shit. I’m all for learning different ways of doing things, but I really don’t need someone to tell me to throw a left hook to the body followed by a right low kick unless he doesn’t like me and just wants to see me take a straight right on the chin.
I like all of the mma shows, even the smaller ones. sometimes boxing if the guys are showing proficiency or heart.
the obvious: BJ Penn. Nick and Nate Diaz. For BJJ, Roger Gracie, not especially exciting as he sticks to the basics, but his technique is spectacular. Jacare as well.
I don’t know, whatevas
I do two fairly boring, high rep, full-body workouts per week, and three sprinting workouts

Muay Thai, submission grappling, MMA classes. I am a newbie so I have not been training long, so no competition - but that is the direction that I am headed.

2) Which one’s do you enjoy watching[quote]
MMA of all sorts, a little boxing.
[quote]
3) Who are some of your favorite fighters[quote]
Nate Diaz, Forrest Griffin… and a bunch of the usuals. I don’t really have FAVORITE fighters per se, I just respect fighters that dedicate themselves to the sport and leave it all out when they fight.
[quote]
4) A lot of us the MMA Hub thread as our training blog… should we create individual ones here, continue to use the Hub thread, or start to use our profiles.[quote]
I like the sticking to the Hub idea. Although it could get a little cluttered eventually and I would love to see how people train who maybe train for different combat sports than I.
[quote]
5) what kind of lifting do you do to improve your performance
[quote]
Three fullbody-ish strength sessions a week, that will probably turn into two and a dynamic workout. Plus conditioning, classes etc. obviously.
