College is Amazing

X, I fucking love your hair.

There are some weekends when you DO have to be “that guy” staying in while everyone else has fun, goes to the game, etc. The key is to know when those weekends will be coming up, plan for them, and have a good time and do stupid shit when time permits.

Is this really so hard to understand?
I just wanted the words stated. I know kids do read this shit and some of them take it seriously. I have the pms to prove it.
And this is just preparing for life, I cannot go out and do an all night bender the day before I have to see and treat 60-70 patients. But I want to drink a few and have a BBQ on Saturday night I have prepared myself for that.

??

There were weekends where I was that guy…because being that guy at times is what allowed me to do what I’m doing right now.

What types of jobs do you guys have when you write shit like this?

Care to let us know?
I figured this was coming…I am a HR Manager for a publicly traded energy developer. I have a Masters degree, and I had a great fucking time in college.

I worked my ass off in the classroom and the gym and I partied hard…it is possible, lot’s of people do it.

Anything else?

It is what you do with the degree. What else can you do with those degrees besides go get more schooling. Go apply for a job with just an undergrad in philosophy or business. “not what you got” thats some feel good guidance counselor bullshit.

X is right. I had a girlfriend with a 3.8 in Developmental Bio with a focus on genetics. That is impressive. She started as a temp right out of school making over 40K, before she was even full time, in an area where that was good for the cost of living. I had a friend with a 3.9 who doubled majored in math and physics. He wrote a dissertation for the honors college on some black hole theory. That is impressive. But thats cool, see what you can do with that liberal arts degree.

Given I go to UT, which is a pretty elite business school, I might be biased. However, business is anything but a joke. Upper divison accounting classes are anything but easy. And to the idiot who said business is a “worthless” major…fuck you. The worst comment ever made on T-Nation. Finance/Accounting is a very sought after field, only taking the backseat to engineering/computer science and various graduate degrees. I have the statistics to prove it.

As for partying, go for it…just know your limits. There is no right answer. Don’t let anyone decide how you should be on a daily basis other than yourself.

Yes. When people like you tell them to not be the guy in the dorm room studying on the weekends, people like me wonder why.

Yes, many of us understand balance needs to be there and many of us on this forum are actual professionals with above average backgrounds in different fields, but your comment was irresponsible at best so I commented on it.

Still have a problem with that?

I drank/partied a good amount in college, by this I mean 5 days a week at least a 750 ml of cheap vodka or whiskey plus a few beers thrown in as chasers. I was a dual mathematics/computer science major and most semesters my course load was 18-22 credits. Did I have 3.5 when I graduated? No. Did I care? Not really. I had a blast in college, and wouldn’t trade the memories for anything.

Doctor92, I agree with you. College does help lay a foundation for your life. However, why is it that drinking until you puke is such a bad thing? Would you scold someone for lifting or running until they puke? Maybe it is all part of a growth process and college is a vehicle for experiences. I am a huge advocate for doing everything you can to succeed in life. But I consider success as living life to the fullest and taking every opportunity to experience something new. Sometimes those experiences are full of learning, pain, or discipline. But sometimes (these times have become much fewer and far between as the years pass) those experiences consist of getting drunk and grabbing boobies.

You serious? That “not really” GPA is why there is a problem with it. From what I gather, he is a doctor. You don’t get to be one of those with a shitty college GPA or work ethic.

When i said shit degree. I meant shit as a stand alone undergrad. Get the appropriate follow on degree and your fine. Case in point, another friend, undergrad in business and an MBA. Has a sweet job in NYC.

my first weekend at college a kid on my floor almost died from drinking, the ambulance showed up a couple more times the first month…

The OP sounds like he won’t be at college for long, and if he does make it through, he’ll end up with some shit prize-in-a-cereal-box type degree, complain about how the economy sucks and no one will hire him when he gets out. And the day that he DOES get a job, he’ll show up everyday with the mentality of doing the absolute minimum to keep from getting fired, then he’ll get fired, say that the boss was a biased asshole and end up working at a pac sun clothing store, make it to a managing position and pull $28k a year.

This mentality plagues a majority of our college students. Basically everything that was “cool” was based on drinking…uh, I dare you to fucking grow up? I dare you. You thought it was awesome to see a guy projectile vomit into an elevator? wow dude, wow…

truely pathetic
lol what? I had to stop reading the thread after reading this jealous bullshit. Not everyone needs to spend hours upon hours doing homework and studying to do well in school. Sorry if people like to go out and enjoy themselves even if that means drinking. This is when time management comes handy. I’m sorry you couldn’t enjoy school to its fullest potential.

truly pathetic

No problem at all.

But let it be know that I interview many people for positions that do not have the necessary social skills to make it a competitive work environment…many of these people look fantastic on paper, but FOLD in an interview.

These are people skills that you learn by…socializing. My point is, development in college is not only school work intensive… it is social interaction as well.

I wanted make sure the OP understood that cutting loose is fine as long as you cover you schoolwork. At no point did I say blow off school to party.

I spent most of my free time in college trying to get a record deal, lifting weights or doing some of that socializing you are talking about. I am pretty sure I could have fucked around way more than I did, but one thing I did have was a passionate drive to recah the goals I had no matter what they were.

Yeah, I do think that alone is what is missing with most students…and let’s face it, most of these fuckers will barely pass because of how easy it is to simply say “fuck class” and spend that hour watching 20 year old lady ass walk around campus before spending the whole night seeing just how much Tequila and Vodka you can drink before turning into a living vomit fountain.

Like I said, I had shit to do.

So, enjoy college, have sex, try some shit you never did before…but don’t be like my roommates and spend all day playing Mortal Kombat and all night smoking weed. I mean, why waste the money?

Well what do you consider a shitty GPA? I finished with a 3.2 which grade wise isn’t incredible but I wouldn’t call it shitty. My point was I didn’t finish with honors, and while I probably could have it was learning experience in more than just academics. I am not knocking the Dr. and all the hard work that he obviously put in. Just saying life in college isn’t just about what you learn in class and from books.

yeah. This is part of why china be ‘eating our lunch.’ ( I hate that expression )

Aternatively if you do well in undergrad with a decent degree, have good relationships with your teachers the world is your oyster. Med school, law school, grad school, architecture school, peace corp, decent job fresh out etc.

YES, EVERYONE does need to spend hours and hours studying/working on shit, and even after all that, you can only hope/pray for a 3.0. The material is hard and the professors don’t make it easy. I’d really like for you to go through one week of junior level engineering just so you can realize how ridiculous it is.

The weekends are simply there for sleep and catching up on all the shit you weren’t able to get done during the week cause there was so much to do. The field will be easier than the schooling, I know this, again thats why I’m taking it so seriously right now.

Well, a 3.2 in applying for med or dental school is considered low by most standards…meaning that to balance that, you would need an impressive MCAT or DAT score and some other personal qualities and extracurriculars that make you stand out (rare).

If you have that gpa…while being the quarterback…or while starting some campus community service programs over those fours years, you may do ok.

Thanks for the analysis but I am doing just fine man. My goal was never graduate school and I am very proud of what I do and where I work. In fact I am doing what I love which is what I consider success.

What’s with that guy? Forget the fact that I’m on the mock trial and crew team, that I’m heavily involved in community service, that I got here on a scholarship, that I have an MCAT practice book sitting right here on my desk. I must want to leech off society.
