College Cafeteria Nutrition Challenge!

Hi Guys!

I’m a first year student in university, and made the popular choice of staying in residence in order to “adjust” to the new environment and not have to “worry” about things like cooking. Enter the cafeteria. Pizza, noodles, rice, french fries…arrggghhh!

I’m almost out of this place, I’m gone at the end of April and never looking back. In the meantime I’ve decided that I want to start losing fat so I can hit the beaches hard this summer. As it stands I’ve cleaned up my eating quite a bit, and lost about ten pounds since the New Year. I’d like to continue this trend, but here’s what’s giving me trouble:

lunch and supper- the cafeteria I eat at has only one regular source of reasonably ok protein without massive amounts of carbs: tuna salad wraps. Now I’ve heard that one shouldn’t eat tuna in large quantities on a regular basis but I’m at a loss. So I’ve compromised my protein/carb numbers (with the associated rise in calories) lately just to get some variety. What do you guys think? Good or bad idea? Bearing in mind this is two meals/day until the end of April.

Breakfast is fine, I take five whole eggs boiled every morning as well as one or two cups of skim milk at each meal.

I’ve also recently started drinking protein shakes in the morning just to make sure I hit 200g/day, but that stuff isn’t quite food.

Thanks for your input on this… I can hardly wait to have my own place and do the freakin shopping myself!

For the time being, you gotta be smart.
If you’re lacking protein, buy a foreman grill if you don’t have an oven and cook your chicken breasts and steaks.
If you’re lacking carbs, get them from toast, pasta, rice, oats, etc… Again buy a rice cooker if you don’t have one (they’re around 30$ for the cheap-o ones).

But the ultimate solution is to write to the head of the cafeteria and CC the school’s attendant saying the food provided is unhealthy and you’re all concerned about what you eat. Suggest a few different foods they can add to their ‘‘healthy’’ menus. If they don’t show a care at all, contact a few news papers and TV channels and make a big deal out of it. That should take care of them.

Hey thanks for the tips… I guess I should point out that after dropping a ton of cash on residence I don’t really have the money to start hitting the grocery store and getting real food until the summer job starts.

The main question is, this whole tuna thing. Is it a bad idea to start getting 50-100g of the day’s protein from tuna for the next 2-3 months?

Thanks!

Buy steel cut oatmeal in bulk. It’s $0.75/lb here…if you buy the stuff in packages you get ripped off. That’s a healthy carb for you to eat and it’s cheap.

Yes, it’s a bad idea to get 50-100g protein from tuna everyday!

It sounds like you’re a lazy guy and dont want to put the effort to making a point. It’s your right to be provided with healthy food. You paid for food, you shouldn’t get poison. Get off your lazy ass, start Microsoft Word and make a big deal out of it. If i’m totally wrong, and have already started writing forgive me.

about your tuna, I wouldn’t worry about the whole tuna overload. A lot of people say it’s bad to consume so much tuna due to the mercury poisoning scare… But you’d have to consume ALOT of tuna to be in danger. On the other hand I am no doctor, dietitian or marine scientist… I’m just a bodybuilder. Ask an actual doctor, dietitian or the company you buy your Tuna from. They’ll give you the best answer.

There is alot of info that says the “mercury scare” isnt as bad as people make it seem. Also, I’m in college too, and many colleges have it written somewhere in their food contract that they have to cater to people’s circumstances if requested. So, like he said, make an issue out of it.

Trick? Tupperwear and alot of boiled eggs (Take food from the cafe for the rest of the day)

Yeah, bitch and complain to the school! Start something about it.

Thanks for the input so far… I’m going to be sending my residence a letter shortly, maybe I can pressure them to change. In the meantime I guess I’ll stick it out with that tuna crap… at least it’s protein.

About the Tuna, i’d just like to say that i’ve been eating 1-2 cans of tuna a day for many months and my mercury levels are fine.
Mercury in tuna is over exaggerated.
