Another College Eating Thread

Hey guys, another long time lurker and first time poster. I have read the other college eating threads, which have given me some useful information. My cafeteria has basically the same as everyone is saying, a salad bar, meat and veggies for me to choose from as far as healthy foods go.

The problem is, most of the meat they cook they drown it in some sort of mystery oil, and at first omelette bar seemed great, until I realized they poured about ten tbsp of melted butter in the pan to make it.

My question is that have you guys in college ever requested to have them cook the meat in olive oil, or to use cooking spray? I’m trying to follow a Paleo diet, and all the lunch meat just looks disgustingly processed. I have ten meals a week there, so I just might end up buying everything at the supermarket and cook everything in my dorm with a george foreman grill.

Any tips or suggestions would be helpful. Thanks

If your fridge has a freezer section, buy steaks or ground beef and put them in several bags. Use your foreman and make them a couple bags at a time, and store the rest in your fridge.

Grow! Whey would be nice to keep around (pretty damn affordable as well) for extra protein throughout the day. Cottage cheese would help for pre-bed nutrition, and doesn’t take up a ton of storage space.

My cafeteria freshman year would use olive oil, and they didn’t mind if you asked them to skimp back some on it.

As for the mystery-processed meat, if it really looks that bad, just bring tupper-ware and store anything that looks good (veggies, cottage cheese, bread, etc.) and learn to like canned tuna, chicken, salmon, and beans. That’s just my two cents, and my experience from freshman year.

I’m one of the few juniors still living on campus. I’ll be proud of some of the meals cooked one day (today was turkey london broil) and be disgusted the next (yesterday was stuffed shells). Let me tell you ziplock bags are my friends.

If you see that the dining hall is having something you would normally eat, stock up and put it in a fridge. That way, you can eat it during stuffed shells day.

All great ideas, thanks for the tips

they dont grill up any plain chicken breast?

Very rarely. The only plain chicken that they cook is usually baked, and most of the time they will pour sauce all over it. So it’s hard for me to rely on them always having chicken. Most of the meat has a lot of fat, there’s never any lean pieces to choose from.

Aramark supplies the food, the same company that serves prisons, so it cant be that good lol. I’ll just have to stock up whenever they have something I can eat.

man i thought i had it rought with lackmans associated dining.

As for a fast steak: buy a good grill!
I bought one and I’m loving it! It’s fast (5 min on this thing and you’re set) it drains away all the murky liquids ( not sure if they are healthy) and all the oil you need is a little olive oil.
Im kinda addicted to this thing, i even tried putting my veggies on this thing.
Really worth buying!

O yeah… fish n stuff, chicken even sandwiches come out just fine

Bag up meat, wipe/wash off sauce. eat?

Depends how desperate you are for nutrition I guess.

Instead of omlettes, just get some hard boiled eggs.
I also agree with pretty much everything else said in this thread.
