I know most every guy that see this post will laugh but I’m use to it by now. My main sport is rugby but last fall one of my close girl friends asked me to come to cheerleading with her. I thought is sounded kinda gay but being a good friend I went anyway.
It’s actualy really fun and you always have a nice view if u get what I’m sayying. The reason I’m posting is I want to make a lifting program for the girls that we are throwing to help them out. The link below is a basic flick then the stunt.
Any ideas on some exercise would be awesome so I can make them some work out logs.
Background: In high school, my two sisters AND brother were cheerleaders and I played football.
Now the funny part:
I was visiting some of my family in Atlanta this weekend, we went to the Falcons game and they were giving out pom-poms. I grabbed a couple to give to my four year old niece. We get home and I give them to her, “Ansley, show me a cheer!”
“I’m not going to show you a cheer Uncle Andrew, I don’t know any!”
I proceed to wave my arms around like and idiot, " I don’t know any either, you should get your aunts to show you one, or even your Uncle Alex, he was a cheerleader!"
“Uncle Andrew, boys can’t be cheerleaders!”
Take what you will from that story. My brother did ok with a few of the cheerleaders though.
Cool videos. Change the name and I’ll be in. If you called it gymnastics and cut out the cheering, I’d totally be down. At your level (the videos) I’m guessing the cheering is kept to a minimum. Sweet stuff and a great view!! Definately think it would be fun to throw some chicks around.

I was a cheerleading throughout high school, and I currently coach at a gymnastics center. My suggestions have always been as follows for cheerleading:

Basics:
Hear are some nuts vids of guys that are nuts.

That shit is bananas. Those dudes are freakin strong, those girls are freakin small, and they’re all great athletes. Collegiate cheerleading is no joke.

lots of posterior chain work
overhead pressing
core stability
flexibility (shoulders and lower body)
This applies to girls and guys.[/quote]
Good advice. I’d only add some biceps/forearm specific work (pronations/supinations, wrist roller, chins, maybe cheat curls too) for the lifters, elbow/wrist stability is too important not to make a priority as well. Don’t want to drop anyone over your head for any number of reasons.
I use to have a BJJ training partner who was a cheerleader and gymnist in college. Unreal strength for the 190 pounds he weighed. He felt stronger than most of our heavyweights.
I was a cheerleader in college as well. I would recommend for the guys doing a lot of hang cleans, cleans from the floor and especially snatches with an emphasis on the speed of the movement (just make sure you/they are doing it right). Upright rows with speed emphasis too. I also agree with the core work, posterior chain work and push presses.
I was a cheerleader for 2 years. I pretty much trained for Olympic lifting because cheer is all about overhead strength. A decent Olympic lifting program should be all you need for cheer. The gymnastics components of cheer training will take care of any speed/plyometric stuff you think you need to do.

Basic Olympic lifting is what I had for the other guys but the girls is where I was having trouble. Thanks a ton for the help guys.
The girls should do gymnastics. Spend the time they would be lifting having them tumble. It will increase their verticals and give them the tumbling skills they need for cheer anyway.
That is, if you have a place for them to practice tumbling safely. Otherwise Olympic lifting would still be decent. They basically need to be able to jump high, so anything that increases vertical (without increasing size of course!) is best. Just use ME and DE methods.

No shit dude, I gotta totally agree with ya on that logic.

If somebody had to say it, it had to be you, Xen. Nice one
i’ve been a cheerleader for the past two years, and coming from a small guy, if you want the skills, as weird as this sounds, then strength isn’t your best bet.
THere are always a few guys who can come into the gym and learn toss hands libs in minutes. i wasn’t one of them. but now, i can oustunt alot of guys from form. form form form is key. if you have a quick explosive toss, which cleans definitely help, and strong enough legs to squat a hundred pound girl, form is all you need.
think about, is cleaning 275 when you can laready toss the girl head high is overkill, considering you always want to catch on the way up and press with your legs, not let it crash down to you.
strength has helped me alot, but don’t rely on strength to press up ugly stunts. nationals judges want to see stunts hit at the top, not at the chest while using all arms to press it up.
spend your time in the gym, but spend more stunting. and if your a tumbler then just tumble constantly, but strengthen your wrists and back especially.
ab strength helps alot, but tumbling really is all form. i’ve seen hgue guys years after cheering throw three to a full with an olympic sized set, cold, that should say enough right htere, that form is more important.
HIIT works really good for routiine work, if you are going to do competitive cheerleading or stunt routines, you need lots of stamina, good lungs, and a lot of guts to last two and half minutes on the mat
