I keep it a few inches above my chest for CGBP to minimize the use of the front delt and try to keep it all in the triceps. When I bench I use full ROM though.

What about Reverse grip bench? I have only tried them once and they seemed pretty difficult on the triceps
I love these on a smith, pushing to the feet as described by the big German

You advocate the dead stop extensions a lot. What is the reason for the dead stop? Is it purely to save the elbows or is there some other advantage? I know you have issues with tri extentions and your elbows.
Them being more elbow friendly just comes from not bringing them down where you would on a skullcrusher.
I advocate them because for some reason, they really work great for tricep growth
Look at the difference in Dusty Hanshaw’s arms… They used to be his weakest muscle-group… And he’s still improving.
Guess it’s kind of like a deadlift for triceps? No idea what is actually responsible for the superiority of the exercise… Of course you use the long head more in it than you would on a regular skullcrusher etc…
I’ve had a lot of success with dead-stop exercises such as board CGP for the tris in general.
Maybe you just get more fiber-recruitment or some such crap by having to power the bar up from a dead stop, with no stretch reflex helping you and all that jazz.

It’s interesting to hear how many people have shoulder issues when doing the CGBP. I guess I’m lucky in that respect, as I do some shoulder problems myself but am able to go right down to my chest without any problems.
I’m thinking of swapping my lifts around next week, would the reverse bench press be a good replacement for the CGBP?
Free-weight or in the smith? (2 rather different exercises)
Smith wide-RGB with a thumb+index finger grip (described all over the board, DC threads, IM etc) is a great replacement that also trains the long head much better than regular CGP imo.
Regular RGB… Hmm. Bit on the dangerous side perhaps, I haven’t done these save a few times and preferred the smith variant with a wide grip.
With the shoulder problems of many people (as in shoulder pain), that’s probably bad setup more than anything… Learn how to do a proper powerlifting setup (though you don’t need to go crazy with the arch, but do use some) and that issue should go away…
You’ll still suffer from delt fatigue and thus problems with stabilization/weakness if you do proper free-weight CGP after chest/delt work though… Can’t help that if you want to go full-ROM and avoid boards and such.
can anyone supply a video of these dead stop extentions?

I was certainly thinking of using the Smith, after (I think it was CC?) recommended them. I agree that regular looks a bit risky.

well i dunno about you, but i’m still on vacation for another week. don’t have too much goin on right now but checkin the net occasionally.
…ok so maybe not simply ‘occasionally.’
Nice, im replacing skull crushers with the lying extentions from now on. When training tricep i knew skull crushers were a bad idea even though my elbows are in good condition. However when i felt some elbow pain one day after working triceps i knew it was time to find a new movement.

I think T-Nation would be getting the short end of that deal =)

even if I’m still lifting girl weights?
CC, haven’t seen you address this yet but do those dead stop skull crushers take less of a beating on the elbows?
I stopped regular skull crushers for that reason.
In the mean time i’m making insane progress with my close grip bench lately but it would be nice to have another exercise I could throw in.

Yeah. You got any particular reason to get injured first or something?
Tommy Konos only come in 3 sizes, I’m guessing that medium would be just right for you, and will fit until you get your arms up to 19-20 or so…

If you do an extension lying and behind the head and stop with upper arms at an incline, yeah, should be easier on the elbows…
Can do bent-forward overhead rope extensions (like the justin harris/troponin vid on youtube) as well, maybe add a bit of a pullover motion or kneel and let your elbows rest on one or two benches or so…
PJR’s with an EZ bar (narrow grip) could do the job as well. Or regular PJR’s if you have DB’s heavy enough.

Dunno man, I just keep repeating the same stuff over and over it seems… You can just copy and paste my old posts until I get back from my holidays
