So today I had my first experience with the power snatch - the routine called for it, that is.
I think I was doing more of a clean and press though - can someone explain where the movement differs from the clean and press? Is it just fluidity of the movement?
I felt awkward as all hell, mind you this was my first shot at an olympic style lift.
Snatch should happen entirely from hip drive and a big shrugging motion. You should catch the weight with your elbows locked out. If you have to press it out at all, you should try lowering the weight. To me it almost feels like throwing the weight straight up the front of the body, rather than lifting/pressing it. (I’m no expert though)
Think of it kind of like an wide grip upright row. Pull the bar close to your face and get under it. As you get under it, you should continue to help it along, trying to raise it to the shy.
It’s hard to explain but easier if you can see it.
I can have kids doing hanging snatches catching in a full split in about ten minutes but that is in person.

IMO that’s not a good way to teach a beginner since it will encourage pulling with the arms when in fact they should not used as a primary mover of the weight.

I did say kind of, it seems to work well in conjunction with the extension. My apologies for lack of clarity on this. It’s easier to display in person.
I think the best to learn how to snatch correctly is to find someone in your gym who already knows how. Stuff on the internet is pretty hard to follow as the snatch compared to the cp is a really rapid movement.
