Clean and Jerk vs Deadlift

Olympic weightlifting consist of two major lifts: the clean and jerk and the snatch. I think that the guy who advised you to practice the deadlift, front squat, and jerk was implying that the clean and jerk can basically be divided into three significant movements (the ones listed above).

this is not taking into account the scoop and all the other technicalities in a clean and jerk/olympic lift, of course. anyway, i do agree in saying that integrating those three lifts will help you in your goal to pack on mass, but not necessarily to master olympic weightlifting as it often takes a while to fully master these highly technical (yet fun!) lifts. =)

Is military press a good exercise to implement in order to be able to do a front squat without a power rack? Or what would anyone suggest to be able lift enough weight to do front squats without a rack.

Without a rack, the weight will be starting from the floor. In order to get the weight to your shoulders, you will have to clean it.

The amount of weight you can clean will probably be less than you can front squat, so that will be the limiting factor.

You will have to know how to clean to press as well because the movement starts from your shoulders.

The rack solves this problem, as the weight starts at your shoulders. Without one, you need to get the weight to your shoulders from the floor.

Exactly, you don’t start with the Oly lifts. You start with the constituent lifts. Add hang power cleans to the mix and you got it made.

Alright, and what length bar should I use? 7ft, 6ft, 5ft?..

Holy shit, I’m going to have to start light with that one. Looks hard.

You start with a broom handle or PVC pipe from Home Depot or where ever.

i agree with one of the members when he said in order to front squat without a rack, you’d essentially have to clean it from the floor. i would suggest zercher squatting from the deadlift, but that would be far beyond what you should be doing as a beginner.

in the time being, maybe you can implement other squat variations that do not need a power rack. try doing bulgarian split squats with dumbbells in both hands, jefferson squats (bar between your legs), hack squats (bar behind you). as for the long run, buy a power rack =D

Do you have a video for proper hack squat form? I couldn’t find one on catalyst athlete (the one where other oly lifts were).

umm here you go:

Anymore input?
