Chuck T's: High or Low Top?

Im gonna get a pair of chucks for the gym but want low tops, what do you guys wear highs or lows, If you guys have some valid points as for why highs are better like ankle support then lets hear it.

I wear highs, but I fold them down.

I don’t think chucks are gonna give you much support, regardless if you get them in highs or lows.

I really only wear mine so that my socks don’t get dirt at the gym.

I used to squat in Asics running shoes, but now have some Chuck hi-top knock offs … so yeah, one extreme to another. I really like lacing up my “Chucks”, really solid feeling.

Incorrect. There’s a reason why almost ever PLer wears Chucks, tims, or a shoe specially built for squatting. They’re great for squatting.

i wear highs. like the dude said, i feel that they give me some extra support once they’re laced up tight. plus i think pairing the low tops with shorts looks really goofy on guys.

I think he meant ankle support. Which is true of Chucks. I love them for deadlifting and squating but I would never wear them to run, play sports, etc… for me they are just lifting shoes.

I agree with you, they are great lifting shoes.

Why would you need ankle support while squatting? I think that is a better question…

I don’t think you do need ankle support which is why I don’t think it matters whether you wear high tops or low tops.

I have noticed that most elite lifters wear the high tops though. I wonder if there is a reason for that. I wear low tops and realy like them.

I wear high tops because low tops look silly.

I wear boxing shoes… I like 'em more than chucks, personally.

Great, yes…because of the flat stable sole. I’ve used both and actually prefer low top only because I preferred the feel. There is no need for ankle support when doing squats or deads (if so the setup needs work) as both can be done barefoot.

I wear the lows, but next pair will be the high tops cause they look way cooler and generally more badass. I just won’t lace them super tight.

Either way, it doesn’t really matter IMHO.

They wear them because that’s what they’ve always worn!

I wear my old wrestling shoes and I feel really good squatting and pulling in them. Anyone else wear wrestling shoes, or at least hear of people wearin them?

Incorrect.

The reason they wear them is not because of their support, it is because they have a flat bottom and offer almost no support. It is as close as you can get to not wearing shoes until you either get Vibram 5 Fingers or go barefoot.

Agreed. Unless a shoe is made of solid plastic, it isn’t going to provide much support regardless of the cut. Even if it did, it would be debatable as to whether that is a good thing since stabilizing the ankle means the mobility is going to have to come from the knee which likely isn’t good.

I prefer low tops because they look better with shorts.

High tops.

I can’t wear Chuck’s unfortunately. By the time they get wide enough for my feet they are like 3" too long on me. I ended up having to go with UNLTD court shoes that have that same feel of the Chuck’s in the sole.

I wear high tops but my next pair will be low tops. I find them a pain in the ass to get on with the floppiness of the high top. It’s like putting on a lace up sock. It becomes an issue when I put on knee sleeves because I can’t pull them over the shoe and I hate having to take the shoes on and off. They look pretty kick ass though.
